The five families do not operate geographically. So it isnt like the Gambinos have Manhatten or the Bonannos have brooklyn. But certain families are more influencal and powerful in certain areas at the same time

I was under the impression that the various LCN families in NYC used to have "territories" in that they were based in certain areas. They were known by these strongholds. With the closure of social clubs and wise guys deciding to live in suburbs instead of "the old neighborhood", along with the FBI naming the clans Lucchese, Bonanno, Genovese… lead to these old names dying off.
I may be wrong but: Genovese's = West Side Bonanno = Brooklyn? Gambino = Little Italy? Lucchese = Bronx Colombo = ?

Perhaps I used the wrong wording. I did not mean to state that a family was exclusively in any given area.
I do KNOW the Genovese's were known as "The West Side" among their crews and I think I remember Tommy Karate's book talking about Bonanno's being known as "Brooklyn", and "Gaspipe" mentioning that Lukes were known as "The Bronx".
I don't know about the ones with ? marks nor saying they exclusively operated in those given areas. I am pretty sure they were named after a portion of each city as opposed to "Gambino's", "Lucchese's" etc.
