Stumbled on this at the local grocery store. It's called American Gangsters: The Rise & Fall of the Mafia (plus who controls organized crime today). I've only skimmed through it myself some parts look interesting. Though they are way too generous about which families they still label "active."

According to the feds and most organized crime experts, there are 10 at most: the 5 NY families, New Jersey, New England, Philadelphia, Chicago, and maybe Detroit. That's it. Nobody else. Not Buffalo. Not Kansas City. Not Rockford. Nor any other family some misguided soul wants to argue about.

That said, here's what they under under the title "What's Happened to the Mafia Families:"

NEW YORK'S BIG FIVE
Bonanno - Active
New York, Arizona, Connecticut & Florida

Colombo - Active
New York, Connecticut & Florida

Gambino - Active
New York, Connecticut & Florida

Genovese - Active
New York, Connecticut & Florida

Lucchese - Active
New York, Connecticut & Florida

BIRMINGHAM
Crime family eradicated

BUFFALO
Magaddino - Active

CHICAGO
The Outfit - Active in Illinois & Las Vegas

Cleveland
Porrello - Active

DALLAS
Crime family eradicated

DENVER
Crime family eradicated

DETROIT
Zerelli - Active

KANSAS CITY
Civella - Active
Missouri & Las Vegas

LOS ANGELES
DeSimone - Active

MILWAUKEE
Balistrieri
- On the ropes

NEW ENGLAND
Patriarca -Active in Boston & Providence

NEW JERSEY
DeCavalcante
- On the ropes

NEW ORLEANS
Marcello
- On the ropes

PENNSYLVANIA
Bruno - Active in Philadelphia & Atlantic City
Bufalino - On the ropes
LaRocca -Active in Pittsburgh & Ohio

ROCHESTER
Crime family eradicated

SAN FRANCISCO
Crime family eradicated

SAN JOSE
Cerrito - On the ropes

SEATTLE
Colacurcio - Active

ST. LOUIS
Giordano - Active

TAMPA
Trafficante - Active

However, elsewhere it says:

The Cosa Nostra in California has almost completely disappeared. Denver, Kansas City, Dallas, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Rochester crews are nonexistent too.

New Orleans, Tampa, Buffalo, and New England are shadows of their former selves. The gangs in Detroit, Philadelphia, and New Jersey are on their knees.

The once-powerful Chicago Syndicate is greatly reduced in numbers and effectiveness. Only in New York does the Mob maintain momentum.

it seems like another intern got too close to a keyboard…and the editor didn't seem to care much about it.

I think you may be right LuanKuci. In California, the only family left is Los Angeles and they should be on the ropes. In Northern California you can still find Mafiosi members, but these guys get their marching orders from Sicily, Bagheria, Palermo, San Vito Lo Capo, and Vicari mainly. Just a made man or two, with a couple of associates from a sicilian clan operating in the area.

Kansas City and Tampa active? They should be listed on the ropes.

How long will it take for people to understand that it takes more than a bunch of bookies/shylocks with Italian last names to have a LCN family?

Active: Boston, Chicago, NYC, Philly
Comatose: Detroit, NJ

anything else is defunct American LCN-wise.

@Giacomo
thanks for the info on N. Cali's Sicilians.

Pretty bizarre list and set of allegations. Does anyone seriously think that Decals are on the ropes, but buffalo, new orleans, san jose and detriot are active? I will not even get into the fact that they don't list the Five Families in New Jersey, which has always been prime territory for them.

Should probably ask Mr. Kierney. I guess if you're Italian, you should be in prison.
I've read the RICO Act, and I can tell you it's more appropriate...
for some of those guys over in Washington than it is for me or any of my fellas here

rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes

What is special about this.

From now on, nothing goes down unless I'm involved. No blackjack no dope deals, no nothing. A nickel bag gets sold in the park, I want in. You guys got fat while everybody starved on the street. Now it's my turn.
