This argument has always been strange to me. Killing, especially guys in witness protection program is bad for business. Why do the feds leave them alone to begin with if they can put heat on them? Why not squash the whole thing if they have the resources to do it? Is it corruption or some human phenomena, that a dead witness makes the agent put down his newspaper and start investigating? I never saw much sense in the explanations that it's good to keep crime going to keep up the Gambino squad budget. Manpower and budgets. Bookies are low on the priority list compared to terrorists and drug kingpins.

Cell phone records can also pin point where you were at a given time.
I wonder if they could get around that one by using prepaid cell phones and changing them every so often?

I wonder if they could get around that one by using prepaid cell phones and changing them every so often? You can those old Nokia phones that were popular 15 years ago are the best to use. Now that I think of it, I think the big old cellphones/car-phones from the 80'/90's are probably the best they had great service especially driving cross country you could get a signal from anywhere.

I'm sure there's murders linked at the bottom of the food chain from the mob flooding the streets with drugs and to black gangs the past 60 years. So indirectly their product creates power struggles against their "alleged" allies in the underworld.

^^^Toned down is a good way to describe it. The problem with comparing street corner drug crews to OC is that the cops know where to immediately start looking or have some general idea of where, if Flamboyant Phil from the Genoveses is left in the street, versus Lil' Tee. Lil' Tee could've gotten a hot one from anyone, Flamboyant Phil is, was, or maybe on LEO's radar, with documented known associates, etc.
I could be drawing some incorrect or off-base comparisons, also. I hate to say it too, but I feel like LEO has a higher incentive to solve an OC based murder than a corner killing any day. Who knows. Just my thoughts on the subject.
