Just thinking how hard it is to be a mobster in today's age in America, your on a hiding to nothing, law enforcement has been pretty successful in shutting down hundreds of mobsters over the years. I wonder if there are less mobsters than ever in America today? I'm not referring to just Italian organized crime, used to be many Jewish,Irish and Black gangsters operating rackets. I know people would say that today there are Cartels, Crips, Bloods etc, but to me a lot of those guys aren't mobsters or gangsters more thugs. I mean more sophisticated OC guys.

As for the American LCN there are approximately 1,000 members remaining. But about 90% of that is in the Northeast. Rougly 75% belonging to the 5 NY families alone. To put it another way, you could add up all of the remaining members outside the Northeast and it would be about the same as the smallest NY family. the ny families may still be around, but, do they still have the trade unions? that was a huge money maker. /

ok thanks guys so not many crews now so maybe one or two ? By the way it's just an FBI estimate. I think that might have been 28 active members but they have at least 40 I think. I don't know much about Chicago but i think they have 3 or 4 crews. Estimates usually don't come in numbers like 28, which suggests they had a list of specific 28 guys who are known made members. This coincides with actual estimates in recent years that have said 25 or 30 members. It's certainly possible that there are some members flying under the radar but I doubt it's enough where the Outfit has "at least 40." I'd be willing to bet that law enforcement is not off by more than, say, 10% with a given family. As far as crews go, during the Family Secrets case there was said to be 4 crews. A more recent article citing the FBI said it was down to 2 or 3 crews.

Depends on what you mean by gangsters but the cartels arent just killers and thugs they have sophisticated intellegience and counter intelligence networks, pyramid like structures and rankings, they are into diverse criminal rackets and the whole operation in the city and cartel as a whole is very under reported in the U.S media. All you hear about the cartels is the killings but if you were living in Mexico, you would have heard orseen the cartels informants, drug dealers etc. the extortions, the police colution and corruption etc. Its not just gangsters killing each other on the street. I would even argue that most people being killed in Mex are not gangsters or killers but informants and street dealers or anyone that gives logisticd support to the local captain and his hitmen(these guys are the actual cartel members). Not to mention how deep rooted some of these drig familoes are.

They almost certainly have tons of guys that have been spilling their guts for years that we don't even know about. Chicago has been so quiet lately. I honestly wonder if there will ever be any large scale revelations or busts again. Seems like it's on deaths door.
