why does Roth try to kill Mike before the thing in Cuba? would it not make more sense to kill him after he has handed over the 2 mil?
thanks to anyone who can help me.

at this point in time i dont think michael was really going to go through with the deal, it was a matter of getting closer to roth and finding out who the trader was in family, and thats it. yes it would make sense to wait, but roth came to realize that michael was not going to forward the money and was pulling out of the deal. if roth wouldve waited it would have just delayed the attempt.

Just want to mention here that you people are mighty lucky to have this forum to turn to with questions like these, in order to more fully understand the movie(s).
It took me years and years of repeat viewings, without the help of any internet BB Board, to figure out what was going on. And sometimes, I STILL don't know...
But then, that is what really has been part of the thrill. If I had gotten all the answers at the very beginning, I can't help but wonder if I'd be as intrigued with the story as I am today.

Apple the beauty of these trilogies (or could be a down fall in some eyes) is that there will always be questions. no matter how many times you watch it something always pokes out at you

Well said, Apple! Roth tried to kill Michael before Havana and the $2 million because a perfect opportunity presented itself at Anthony's party. Roth knew Pentangeli would be there, contentious over Michael's favoring of the Rosato brothers and Roth in their dispute with Pentangeli. Therefore, Pentangeli would have the perfect motivation for wanting to kill Michael, and would make the perfect fall-guy for a crime that Roth ordered. Of course Roth wanted the attack to succeed. After the attack failed, Michael seemed to blame Pentangeli, which was great for Roth. "Plan B," so to speak, was for Roth to offer Michael a piece of his Havana action in return for a $2 million "gift for the President" of Cuba. That way, Roth could lure Michael to Havana, where Roth was all-powerful. Roth could get $2 million out of Michael, then have him killed by government security forces. Roth staged that charade at his birthday party ("At the time of my retirement or death, I turn over my interest in the Havana operation to Michael") as a way of showing, in front of witnesses, that he "loved Michael like a son" and thus supposedly had no motive to kill him. If he'd succeeded in having Michael killed, he could say, "Oh, Michael's missing? Well, it wasn't me--everyone knows I loved the guy and was gonna turn over everything to him. Ya know, we have a guerilla war here, maybe he was accidentally caught in the middle..."
