JCrusher, I'm sorry if I offended you by saying you don't have a clue. You do get the ego part. It's also about pride and respect and knowing your role as a boyfriend in your girlfriend's Italian family. Going out to dinner with a surfer dude from South Orange County, CA, and an Italian father from Jersey. The scene was real life for me. It's very authentic. Imo every Italian father would feel insulted just like Tony did. Tony yelled and reprimanded Fin and threw money on the table because of his ego (just like you said.) Any other Italian father would not let that boy pay either! Money would be handed to him, he would be spoken to with less yelling and he would then understand that he is not to pay. No Italian father would put up with what Fin did imo. And since I do not know any Italian male without an ego it would go down EXACTLY the way it was done in that scene, with the apology at the end!!! That was the real deal right there. Watch the scene. http://youtu.be/AXY6fQUDr3o(Lol You can't surf in Mission Viejo) This will probably be my last post in the Sopranos section I'm here for fun not to argue

But i think you may be mixing up television with reality. In real life tonys reaction wouldnt happen to a regular father and being italian doesnt matter. Now we do fight over getting the check but its friendly fighting not childish ego bullshit like tony did in the show

I don't think any of you have a clue as to the Italian way of paying a bill. Male, female, in this case, mob boss, it's all about showing how successful you are. There are usually fights among adults when the bill comes to the table as to who is paying. You can get your arm stabbed with a fork if you take that bill away from someone.
Also, an Italian daughter belongs to her Italian father until the day she is married. Usually, even after she is married the father will still flip the bill.
The boyfriend or son-in-law is insulting the father when he tries to pay. You just don't do a stupid thing like that. You take your cash out but your father-in-law will stop you and tell you forget about it your money is no good here. I'll take care of it. If he does let you pay then that means he has a slight respect for you and likes you a little bit.
And that's why Tony was pissed You nailed it perfectly..
"I'll give you undignified. Go fuck yourself. You, Phil... whoever. He's my fuckin' cousin."
"My name is George. I'm unemployed and live with my parents"..

Except it's not an Italian thing, that's pretty much everyone whose not an ungrateful shit. Of course you make the offer to pay, it's universal. Come'on, how many girls (on a date) reach for their wallets knowing the guy is going to stop them? It's not even about actually wanting to pay so much as it is making the gesture because that's just being polite.
