I think most guys that retire are associates and low level soldiers who we don't really hear about. If you're known, good luck

of course there is frank Costello, tony accardo. joe bonnano
carlo Gambino, and many others who died of old age, not spending years in prison, and never getting whacked.
I think lombardos post is right, 1- 1000.. chance.

^^ Joe Arcuri's an interesting guy. Amazing he lasted that long.
Another person who I'd say "won" is Richie "The Boot" Boiardo. Lived to 93 I think and only did a little bit of prison time.

ralphies right...... the ones that get all the ink, never seem to live long enough to retire, and by, and large are not the most powerful either, its the ones you never hear about, that die old with fortunes.

These are other mafia guys, who retired with no repercussions. Most of this list are guys who are rarely mentioned.
Thomas Gambino, or was he ''shelved''?
Peter Defeo, He was a captain in the Westside, who got in a dispute with Barny Bellomo, and lost that dispute. He retired soon after. By then he was in his 80's.
Joseph Abate, New Jersey Captain in the Lucchese's, who retired.
Frank Garafola, Joe Bonanno's underboss, who retired in the late 50's, and moved to Sicily.
Vincent Alo, Genovese captain, who retired in the 1970's. Crew was taken over by Matthew Ianniello.
Vincent Rao, Lucchese Consigliere, who had served that family for over 40+ years. He retired in the 1970's.
Andy Gerardo, Westside Captain, who retired in the 1990's.
Frank Scibelli, Westside Captain, who successfully retired, and controlled a crew in Massachusetts.

So more or less it's no different that what they say to young inner city kids when they get involved with gangbangin'...two ways out death and prison. That's not true, actually. It's become a common intervention line, but the statistics simply don't back it up. A very small percentage of gang members get murdered, and the percentage which end up serving long term prison terms is well below half. Most gang members just get old while being unemployable, are forced by economic conditions to move away from fellow gang members, and just end up burnt out and on some kind of assistance, either parents, a spouse/partner with a decent job, public assistance, etc. Some get lucky enough to end up in decent jobs themselves. Whatever the case, most do not die or go to prison. And the blood in blood out oath is unenforced for the most part once gang members are into their 30s.
"...the successful annihilation of organized crime's subculture in America would rock the 'legitimate' world's foundation, which would ultimately force fundamental social changes and redistributions of wealth and power in this country. Meyer Lansky's dream was to bond the two worlds together so that one could not survive without the other." - Dan E. Moldea

Although death and prison are certain for those that remain active. Just that most wise up by a certain age and slow down.

If you don't mean loaded $$$
Then there are hundreds if not thousands. thousands? serp your posta are usually spot on, but are you positive that you are correct in saying thousands? If you are not talking getting to millionaire status just think of all the families west coast south and in between since the twentys on sooner all the made guys and all The associates and there associates then you add all the other criminal gangs that have been intertwined since Prohibition era easily thousands . Just in the bootlegging days so many got rich and got away from Louisiana to Canada easy thousands . Now if you are talking made guys and millionaires than the number smaller but it still high .
