Illegal Sport Gambling Ring Stopped In Utica
November 28th, 2010 – by Glen Farmer
On Wednesday, four people were charged in an Oneida County Court after a 21 month investigation surrounding an illegal sportsbook that took place through illegal websites.
John Swift, 42, Richard Dorsagno Sr., 56, Susan Dorsagno, 56, and Richard Dorsagno Jr., 35, all of Utica, NY, were arraigned.
A search warrant was issued at the homes of each suspect, as well as Rick’s Place – a bar owned by Dorsagno Sr.
Swift is charged with 14 counts of felony first degree promoting gambling, as well as one charge of first degree possession of gambling records.
Dorsagno Sr. is faced with 17 counts of the same promoting felony, as well as one of the possession of gambling records. His spouse faces lesser misdemeanor charges of the promotion of gambling.
Dorsagno Jr. also faces misdemeanor counts of promoting gambling.
More than $200,000 in cash, multiple computers, a couple of vehicles, and gambling records had been seized by authorities.
Authorities used court sanctioned phone taps and Internet monitoring to build a case against the accused.
Internet sportsbooks established in the United States have long been illegal, but there are many USA online sportsbooks operating offshore and accepting American bettors. These sites, despite common belief, are legal.
