I can see in other posts you that he died, but what made people decide that.

Thank,

In Godfather III, Michael speaks to Tom's son Andrew and in reference says something along the lines of "His Father was a good man. He didn't live to see him ordained, but I did. I was very proud." I believe that is the only reference made to Tom Hagen in the film.

Tom's absence in The Godfather III put a huge damper on it for me. He was my favorite character and his replacement George Hamilton seemed so corny.

Thanks Krlea,

Yeah agree I liked Tom. He was often the voice of reason, like with Sonny in Godfather 1 and in the last part of Godfather 2 when Michaels character was deteriating (excuse spelling)

It was explained in GF III that Tom Hagen had died some time before, presumably in the 1960s.

Hagen was not in the film, of course, because Paramount could not come to an agreement with Robert Duvall on $$$.

IMO the absence of Hagen is the big downfall of GFIII, as the ultimate battle between Michael and Hagen was clearly being set up toward the end of GFII.

Maybe he died in 1971. Michael said it had been 8 years since he had seen Kay. Maybe the last time they saw each other was at Tom's funeral. Just a guess. cool

Hagen was sorely missed in III. It's too bad the movie was a rush job to get in the theaters for the holidays. If time and money had been given to the production, we might have had another actress as Mary and Duvall back as Hagen.

What happened to Tom? He fell off the face of the earth. rolleyes They really needed to touch on that a little more. I dont care if Bobby Duvall told FFC his script was shit and he didnt want to be in it, he shouldnt have taken it out on the sharacter. The audence deservs more of an explaination.
