Federal agents find $20 million in cash inside box spring in Mass. apartment as Brazilian man is busted for role in pyramid scheme BY DAVID BOROFF NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Tuesday, January 24, 2017, 4:02 PM
That must have been one comfortable mattress.
Authorities released a photo Monday of $20 million in cash hidden inside a box spring in a Massachusetts apartment.
The discovery led to the arrest of a Brazilian man earlier this month in connection with a pyramid scheme involving the defunct internet phone company TelexFree.
Cleber Rene Rizerio Rocha, 28, was ordered held without bail on Monday when a judge ruled that he is a flight risk. He is being held him on a charge of conspiring to commit money laundering.
Georgia prosecutor among 56 busted in massive prostitution sting Rocha was part of a scheme to transfer millions of dollars to Brazil by laundering the cash through Hong Kong, according to prosecutors.
The suspect, acting as a courier for a relative of one of the founders of TelexFree, flew from Brazil to JFK Airport a few days before he was arrested, according to the Department of Justice.
On the day of his arrest, a "cooperating witness" gave Rocha $2.2 million in a suitcase during a meeting at a restaurant. Federal agents later searched his Westborough apartment and "seized a massive stockpile of cash" in the box spring.
Rocha faces 20 years in prison.
