'Ndrangheta: arrest fugitive, he had some weapons at home. He was with a woman, who was denounced in a state of freedom REGGIO CALABRIA, 20 MAR - He was hiding some weapons, including a rifle, in the den where he was hiding, 67-year-old Fernando Spagnolo, the alleged boss of the 'Ndrangheta fugitive from 2019 arrested yesterday by the carabinieri in Casali del Manco, in the Cosentino area. Considered the boss of Stilo, in Locride, Spagnolo has to serve a life sentence for murder. When he was identified by the military, the fugitive was preparing lunch.
The house where the fugitive had found refuge was protected by some video surveillance systems and alarms. Spagnolo also tried to escape, but was immediately blocked by the carabinieri. The alleged boss, among other things, was in the company of a 46-year-old woman who was denounced in a state of freedom for procuring non-compliance with the sentence.
The carabinieri of the provincial command of Reggio Calabria, who identified and arrested the fugitive, made use of the collaboration of the soldiers of Cosenza and Crotone, who provided their information and knowledge of the territory, with the joint coordination of the Dda of Reggio and Catanzaro, directed, respectively, by Giovanni Bombardieri and Nicola Gratteri.

Wife arrested in farmer's 'Ndrangheta murder Agostino Ascone allegedly killed by wife, lover and accomplice
(ANSA) - ROME, APR 11 - The wife of a farmer was arrested in Calabria Monday on suspicion of murdering her husband with the help of two other men in a crime police said "matured in the context of the (Calabrian mafia) 'Ndrangheta". The farmer, Agostino Ascone, went missing on December 27 from his farm at Amato di Taurianova, in the province of Reggio Calabria. Police on Monday arrested hiw widow Ilaria Sturiale, her lover Salvatore Antonio Figliuzzi, and a suspected accomplice of the couple, Giuseppe Trapasso. They were arrested on warrants issued by prosecutors in Gioia Tauro. Police said the crime "matured in a milieu marked by the 'Ndrangheta codes of conduct including omertà and the force of intimidation those implicated were able to exert". The trio allegedly murdered the farmer and disposed of his body, police said. They have been detained in jail pending the confirmation of their arrest warrants. They have not yet divulged where they allegedly buried Ascone's body, police said. The case was handled by special-branch RIS police from Messina and the Reggio Calabria anti-crime squad. (ANSA).

Women have had and currently have an important role in this criminal reality, not only because with their marriages they strengthen the clan of origin, but because in the cultural transmission of the mafia heritage to their children and in the direct management of illicit affairs while in hiding or the detention of her husband have, over time, covered increasingly more and more relevant roles. The 'Ndrangheta, among other things, provides for a formal (albeit subordinate) hierarchical classification for women, who can reach the degree called "sister of humility".

The Magistrate vs The MobPosted Tue 19 Apr 2022, 11:48am Updated Tue 19 Apr 2022, 11:48am In Italy's south, prosecutors in the province of Vibo Valentia are taking on the Calabrian mafia. For decades, this ruthless mafia group, the 'Ndrangheta, has ruled this region through violence and intimidation. What began as a local mafia group has grown into a powerful, multi-national criminal organisation, with an estimated turnover of 80 billion dollars a year. It also has a presence in Australia. Now Italian prosecutors have launched criminal cases against members of a family they allege is one of the 'Ndrangehta's most powerful clans - the Mancusos. More than 300 members and associates of the Mancusos have been arrested. The charge sheet is sobering. It includes murder, extortion, drug trafficking and money laundering. In this gripping crime saga, Fran Kelly travels to Vibo Valentia to tell the story of this historic attempt to curb the power of the 'Ndrangheta. She gets rare access to the man leading the trial, Chief Prosecutor Nicola Gratteri. He's been investigating the Calabrian mafia for decades and has long been on the mafia's kill list. "There's always tension. There's always fear and you must always be careful," he tells Kelly as he drives to court surrounded by his security motorcade. "You have to tame fear and talk to death." Kelly speaks with community members who now feel emboldened to speak out against the mafia. "The number of people turning on the mafia has increased," says anti-mafia activist Giuseppe Borrello. 'It's new for Vibo Valentia." Gratteri's actions have given 'a lot of hope' to Sara Scarpulla, whose son was blown up in a car bomb organised by a member of the Mancuso family. Kelly also visits Milan, Italy's financial heart, where the 'Ndrangheta have established a strong presence. The head of Milan's Anti-Mafia Department, Prosecutor Alessandra Dolci, calls for Australian law enforcement to connect more urgently with their counterparts in Italy. "It would be appropriate for the Australian police to establish stronger relations with our authorities," she tells Kelly. "As we say, if you don't know, you don't see. They must become aware of the danger presented by the 'Ndrangheta." In Calabria, not everyone in the community is rallying behind Nicola Gratteri's maxi-trial. "There's vicious mudslinging aimed at the Prosecutor's Office," explains lawyer Giovanna Fronte. "That's how the 'Ndrangheta operates." For the people of Vibo Valentia, the maxi-trial has raised hopes of a new chapter in which the State regains control of a land long thought lost to organised crime. But can these prosecutions uproot the powerful networks of the 'Ndrangheta? “Italian Ndrangheta plans bomb attack on prosecutor"
Hitmen from the Italian Ndrangheta mafia are planning an attack on a public prosecutor, the Italian newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano reports after a warning from a foreign intelligence service. jvh Source : BELGA Yesterday at 4:42 PM The target is Nicola Gratteri, prosecutor in Catanzaro, southern Italy. In recent years, he has played a major role in investigating members of the Ndrangheta mafia. That mafia would now be planning to blow up Gratteri. The Italian security services have provided security for Gratteri and his family. He was given extra bodyguards and a special car that interrupts telephone signals, preventing a possible bomb from being detonated under his car.
The news came to light in an article by the Italian newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano following the election of the new head of the National Directorate for Combating Mafia. Gratteri lost that election due to his dangerous situation. “Gratteri has the right qualities for the job, but is also exposed to the most risks. Indirect information has been obtained from the mafia environment about a possible attack against him," said some councilors.
The news of the attack is all the more shocking for Italians as this month marks the 30th anniversary of Giovanni Falcone, a judge known for prosecuting mafia members, who was also killed in a mafia attack. He, his wife and three of his bodyguards were killed when a bomb exploded as his car drove past on a highway near Palermo. Two months later, another judge was also killed. The incidents are still fresh in Italian collective memory.
