I stumbled across this website that show the numbers and percentages of black migrants that left the South for other regions of the U.S. The best mapping i came across and cover 100 years (1900-2000). Also contain the maps of other in migrations that occured in the U.S history as well.

Found this interesting picture depicting my state migration patterns by counties.

Here is black population growth in three major cities over just 20 years:

New York: 1940: 458.4k; 1950: 747.6k; 1960: 1.668M
Chicago: 1940: 277k; 1950: 402k; 1960: 512k.
LA: 1940: 70.7k; 1950: 222.3k; 1960: 458.9k.

Indeed. It was a major growth in moderate time frame. I didn't know until last year that Chicago's black community reached 1 million. Truly on par with NYC's Black community.

The murder rate in chicago, atlanta, and new orleans is out of control. Chicago is just as bad as Baghdad.

It's no wonder there has been so much racial animosity in LA over the past half century. While New York and Chicago went through heavy integration in the early 20th century, LA was lily white until the 1950s. The black migration out west was met with the confluence of the LAPD aggressively recruiting WW2 veterans from the South. Talk about a powder keg. History explains almost everything.

That was 65 years ago. How do you explain all the violence and murder in those cities ( LA( compton) Chicago) that are now ran by full blown liberals who bend over backwards for blacks. Whats the excuse now?

Actually i would disagree on lily white due to Hispanics wasn't a 'Racial' category during the pre-50s/60s in the census. We all know East LA is and seemingly been predominantly Mexican community. Now with additional latino ethnicities.

I would say that areas in LA that became predominantly Black were once pretty White in the old days (south LA, Compton etc.). But there’s always been Mexican neighborhoods all over LA county since the beginning but in small pockets. Nothing like now of course.

Even Boyle Heights and North East LA had a lot of Jews, Irish and Italians in the old days when gangs like White Fence and the Maravilla gangs were barely starting as it was always said White Fence was started to defend the neighborhood against racist whites that were attacking people. The gang East Side Clover was supposedly predominantly Irish until it eventually became all Mexican/Chicano.

I was just responding to what Oakasfan said about police violence against blacks in the 1950’s which he impied resulted in high black crime rates. My question and response was that those times of unrest occurred over 60 years ago and was wiondering why the rate of violence is so high despite LA and Chicago being ran by liberals who obviously dont oppress minorities. Its a valid question.

As to the topic at hand regarding migration from the south. Many southern blacks worked on farms and due to segregation moved to northern cities or out west to CA to make better lives for themselves which caused difficulty for them due to many blacks ( at that time) not having skills to find employment in more urban settings.
Even in the south, in the 1960’s, many farming jobs normally done by people were being replaced by machines.

There was always a significant Latino population in LA, but very segregated at the time black people were migrating to the region. That's why I said lily white. That's exactly what most of Los Angeles was in the 1950s. Even what makes up for modern day South Central and Compton.

Thanks i wanted to share it not just for the black migration but everyone else as well. I viewed the Mississippi whites and was surprised that a large share went to California. Matter of fact Arthur Harper was the 26th mayor of Los Angeles and originally from my hometown in Mississippi.

No. The U.S census , due to history, treats the Hispanic/Latino category as a broad racial group with multiple ethnicities. So if that person recognized as Hispanic/Latino then they have additional choices ex: white/black/others. Some Hispanics add white and others black.

I think it's a overall misrepresentation of communities due to our culture's deep seated roots in segregation/ideology. I personally define race as in Human race. When speaking about different cultures then that's ethnicity to me.

My country rather use racial umbrellas instead ex: White/Black/Hispanic/Latino/Asian/Natives or Pacific Islanders/ Others or Mixed; but there's multiple ethnicities under each one.

Another great migration: 61,000 Puerto Ricans in NYC in 1940, 612,000 in 1960--tenfold increase in 20 years.

What's even worse is that most of those Puerto Ricans are named Rico. Talk about confusing.

I don't come on as often as I used to, but great finds. One of the push factors from Mississippi was the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. It was truly devastating, especially to poor people of color who lived in cheap shacks that couldn't withstand the flooding. Most of those that headed north went to Chicago.
