The other day I downloaded a windows update and since then lots of small things will not work properly. The new update came with a security pack that I dont need because I already have a virus protection program/firewall. I cant use Win MX and none of the links on my Hotmail account will work. I can access my E-mail but I cant use any links, wich is a big problem becase I accidentally deleted my cookies (that sounds strange) and now I need to use a link to re-enter a password to IMDB. Does anyone know if I can delete this dumbass windows security pack and not the rest of the windows update and if so how??????

As I mentioned in a different post, I've been having computer problems for the past couple weeks. I had the EXACT same problem, except my PC was freezing -- but it was triggered and caused by the same thing: the Windows SP2 package. I took it to the shop and cleaned it out and ran Spysweeper and my anti-virus and EVERYTHING and we couldn't find out the problem. Finally, we came to find it was internet explorer. IE is not compatible with the new SP2 package. This may or may not be your problem, depending if you're even using IE. My suggestion, though -- and what worked for me -- is to do away with IE (don't delete it, as you can't, just don't use it) and download Mozilla. That's what I did, and I've been doing fine.

Mozilla 1.7.3

Eddie, I had almost the same problems after downloading a windows update. All of a sudden 25 desktop Icons appeared on my computer! All junk. Try going to this site : Spybot.com and they have a free trail offer which cleaned out the junk that came into my computer. If that don't work, then see if you have a "RECOVERY DISC" which should have came with your computer. You may just have to crash your hard drive and use the recovery discs to get your computer back to original factory settings. But try the Spybot site first. There is definatley some kind of a flaw in windows update. I will ot download from them anymore.
GOod Luck!

Dunno if you can delete only one segment of an update. A system restore would probably work in getting rid of the entire update.

I hate any Microsoft updates. I hate IE, too.

Eddie,

I don;t think that you really have to do anything, it runs itself. After you downloaded it did a little black screen pop up on your computer informing you that it has blocked X amount of pop ups?

Just download it -- click the download link, save it to disk (make a folder for it, save it in there, preferably), go into start, click "Run," then "Browse," go to where you saved it, open it, install it. You can then set it as your default browser -- it will probably ask you.

I tend to stay away from most updates until I can read the reviews and user comments, especially for things like Windows Service Packs.

One piece of advice I can give is to try the Maxthon browser (formerly known as MyIE2). It's nearly identical to Mozilla, with all of the functionality and just as easy to use.

System Restore should have an automatic checkpoint made soon before the download. Go back to it, and it should wipe it.

Yeah, a system restore should take everything back to where it was prior to that update. To avoid future live updates go to control panel and click on "Automatic updates" and turn it off.

I think half the problem is that SP2 is designed to "turn on" the firewall that's already built into Windows XP. You can, if you want to, just turn it on through control panel > network connections > (pick your connection > advanced tab > turn on the firewall.

I haven't really had any problems, but I'd check what programs are being blocked or allowed by the Windows firewall.

I had a lot of problems after I installed SP2 as well. I couldn't open any links among other things. I am sorry I even installed it.

Anyway, I did a "system restore" and although it took a while to complete, my computer is now working fine. I would recommend it. Just make sure you do the restore and not System recovery.
