Did anyone notice Butch pushing Phil to make the decision to clip someone for Fat Dom going "missing"? It seemed that Butch was a very aggressive Capo possibly Phil's underboss, only for him to insinuate making a connection with Tony. And eventually going behind Phil to make a deal with Nj.

Does anyone think Butch was setting Phil up?

I think Butch realized Phil was making it personal and it was costing everyone money and was worried about his own safety. From both Phil and Tony. Knowing that he would probably become the #1 guy over there made it pretty easy to give him up to Tony. Remember Butch suggested to Phil that they reach out and squash the thing when Phil was hiding out too.

This is a cool convo, I always found Phil interesting. Especially, his part on compromise.

As far as Butch goes, having a revolver stuck in his face, after watching his buddy get curbed, more than likely influenced his decision.

I agree that Phil made it too personal. A stand-up guy who we could assume was a major hitter in his day for Carmine Sr, and has killed many brothers, should have taking it on the chin. Butch saw the writing on the wall and took advantage.
You know who is smarter than gets credit, Little Carmine. During the "meeting if the minds", Carmine talked about his friend Rusty getting clipped and he wanted to get to the bottom of it, in time. Then he bought up Billy Leotardo, knowing that was Phil's soft spot. To me he purposefully used that meeting to stir the pot between Phil and Tony.
When the final meeting came about in the warehouse, we gotta assume that Butch and Little Carmine met before that and got on the same page. Phil had to go.
