The last major "Family Secrets" mobster is out of federal prison.

At age 85, Paul Schiro has now moved to a halfway house.

He had been locked up at Butler Federal Penitentiary in North Carolina and, as the I-Team first reported, he said he wanted out because the jailhouse was a breeding ground for COVID bugs.

Schiro was put away after being among those convicted in the government's "Operation Family Secrets" mob murder trial.

Marcello shouldn't be in a Supermax prison on 23 hour lockdown. I don't even know what they got Shiro on to warrant such a sentence other than for headlines and vindictiveness from the prosecutors. I know Nick Calabrese flipped and testified that he was involved and present in the van during a murder, although Nick was the one that actually pulled the trigger. But that's enough to RICO someone into a murder charge.

Seems pretty screwed up to me to have these defendants forced to be on trial with someone like Calabrese Sr. who was the Roy DeMeo of the Outfit with a lesser body count. Plus all his antics in the courtroom during the trial and Marcello is the one who ended up in Supermax!? Makes no sense.

Schiro and Marcello got screwed in Family Secrets. Lumbo did too for that matter. There was no chance those guys weren't getting life though. despite there being not a lot of evidence for any of their respective crimes.

So Marcello basically got convicted because Michael Spilotro's daughter who answered the phone recognized his voice? Nick Calabrese testified that Marcello drove the Spilotro's to the house in Bensonville where they were murdered, but I don't remember his saying that he was in the basement involved in the actual killings. He testified that DeFronzo was one of the mobsters waiting for the brother's in the basement and was involved and helped with the actual killings and he never even got charged with anything. Because he was an upper echelon informant. Why wouldn't they have charged him?

Some really odd shit that happened in that trial. Pretty flimsy cases against some of these guys and they got hammered with the sentencing. Makes no sense that Marcello is in a Supermax prison at 80 years old. The guy doesn't have any power in the Outfit, if there is even an "Outfit" at this point to have power over. There was speculation he was involved in other murders, you can't try and convict someone because he was suspected in other murders.

Im surpised that with the gangs in Chicago that are more dangerous than the Outfit the LE spend so much money and time with a bunch of old guys but ehi its the mafia and are best trophies than some blacks or latinos.

I live in Illinois and this trial was a big deal, lots of headlines. They were referring to the Spilotro's as the "Casino murders" and it was the first time a made guy in the Outfit was ratting.

Also, the media will/does downplay and flat out ignore gang violence.Chicago was a much safer place back in the Outfit's heyday.
