Detroit
I’m just gonna start by saying that Scott is a fantastic writer. I love his books, and really like his site. He provides great information on Detroits past. So in no way am I bashing him. I consider him to be the best crime writer in Michigan.

Now, that being said I feel like some of these articles about current mafia affairs in Detroit are a little off. I get it, he’s trying to sell and entice you on the modern day Mafia.

I’m from Detroit area and I can tell you these guys are almost completely legit. Besides a little drug pushing and gambling. They all own businesses or have legit 9-5 jobs. At least on paper.

D’anna brothers own a construction and real estate company that Mimmo’s kid is the front man for. Joe pushes drug on the upper Eastside. From talking to him, he is the real deal old school gangster. Very intimidating guy to be around.

Lapiana is super rich after selling his company. Lives in a huge home off of Lone Pine rd in Bloomfield hills. The only time I’ve ever seen him in person was at the Caucus club downtown for a meeting, (no, not a mob related one) lol.

Specs Tocco looks like he is not doing well. He used to hang at the Stage Deli in West Bloomfield and Churchills Cigar in Birmingham down the street from Tony Lops restaurant. But I haven’t seen him at either in quite awhile. I know his health has been declining.

Jack Tocco Jr. Owns a string of companies. I know his big one is linens.

Jack Giacalone is a hermit. He never really leaves his house anymore. I used to see him at Stage deli every Tuesday. His sons runs a weed dispensery in Farmington Hills.

Vince Giacalone owns a chain of pizza places.

The Rugerio brothers own the Roman village and Antonios chain in Metro Detroit.

Big Paulie Corrado works s Union job at one of the Big 3. He’s had multiple restaurants. All of which have failed. The most recent was Dominics in Harrison Township.

Anthony Tocco Jr. Tawncy’s son owns Carmela foods.

Rugirello brothers who are now deceased owned a game ranch in Dexter, an extermination company. I know there nephew runs Villanova Construction.

These guys are all over the place. They’ve since shuttered all their Clubs and hang outs. The only one I believe that’s still a spot for them is Cafe Italia on Hayes rd. Mimmo can be seen there when he’s not at his restaurant Aurelio’s.

Luciano’s used to be a hotspot for them. I try to go there once a week. I have not seen any of them there in quite awhile. Even Mackey doesn’t hold court there anymore.

I feel like Detroit is losing its structure and is just a bunch of old timers coasting on past reputations. There are not many of them left and I have not really seen any younger guys getting into that life. Most of there kids are college graduates/business owners.

It's just not worth living the outlaw lifestyle any longer. As a Cali convict summarized, he would see the same acquaintances come and go in the joint. You get paroled, stay out, make some money, get nabbed and do a few years. Now, with mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines, 3-strikes, everyone went legitimate.

This is the way it is supposed to be with a secret society.
There is a reason why all of the Detroit, bosses died at home in their beds.

In the 1970's the admin insisted that all of the newer generation had to get a college degree.

In the 1990's the admin did not want Nove Tocco, shaking down bookies and charging a street tax, because it brought on too much heat, and told him they would rather him 1'X a year put a mask on and go around robbing banks, that would attract less L.E. attention. (He did not listen took a pinch and flipped).`````

I read they only open their books once every 15 years and its more or less only family.

They are successful business men there is no need for them to take stupid chances, the last indictment was the Da'anna brothers for shaking down a rival, that was a stupid mistake and big miscalculation on their part, the guy they tried to shake down was from the old country and they never thought he would be a "RATTO", the odds are most people would have just paid and that would have been that.

Fast forward today to BensonHURST, which used to be the Amercia's most mobbed up zip code.
They were everywhere into everything.

If you are an outsider and come here you would say they do NOT exist anymore.
You do not see anything.

They are still here you just have to know where to look.

No more clubs, bookie joints, fronts they used to be on almost every corner, sometimes 2-3 on a block.

They are mostly leaving the street level crimes to low level street criminals.
For the most part especially the guys with money.

With the wealth that the admin and mostly all of their members have accumulated through the years they def are not making small juice loans to degeneration gamblers who cant afford to pay.

They are putting up the money for these legit businesses to bring more legit money.
Doing deals like below:

I just heard the Persico's opened a legal pot dispensary in Coney Island Brooklyn.

The Persico's went from being the biggest weed importers to opening legal wees spots these days.

I am no way comparing the two families as in my eyes Detroit is the most successful LCN, family in American history.
The Colombo family is the opposite of success.

from what i could find there looks to be less than 10 made members/soldiers left. does that # make sense?

in no order or rank
1.jack giacalone
2.peter tocco (nephew of former BOSS GIACOMO TOCCO)
3.anthony lapiana
4.david aceto
5.peter tocco ("aka peter gotti")-bodyguard/driver for jack giacalone?
6.giuseppe d'anna
7.girolamo d'anna
8.paul corrado

-much like the chicago outfit the partnership was able to "go legit" into some areas of society over the years so there is no clear distinction.
-i realize there could be more alleged made members than this.
-i have seen referenced that anthony lapiana was once a resident of chicago and possibly did business with members of cicero crew based "wild bunch" crew. is there any truth to this? if true would it even hold any relevance to the modern day detroit mafia? connections to chicago are now over 40 years old and lapiana appears to be a successful businessman with almost no criminal record.

They have still strong links to Terrasini, Province of Palermo.

Sonny, I’m not sure what the name of Giacalone’s kid dispensary is. I’m sure Scott would know.

I have what I believe is a pretty accurate chart, but this site won’t let me load it.

The family has always been close knit organization with the kids of wise guys being groomed and taking over. This does not seem to be the case anymore.

The D’annas father or uncle, I can’t remember which, is a high ranking member of the Sicilian mafia in Terrasini. Most of these guys in Detroit come from there or where my family is from in Trapani.

Salvatore D'Anna is the current capomafia of Terrasini.
