This next challenge involves eight hoodlums, all of whom operated in New York. Four were with the Gambino crew, two were Bonanno members, and two were with the Genovese crew.

Each had a variation of the nickname, "Toto"

Your job is to provide the real ‘first and last name’ for each man, and then match the (letter) of his nickname with the corresponding (number) of the Family he was with.

A) Toto
B) Toddo
C) Little Toto
D) Toto
E) Toddo Mack
F) Toto
G) Toddo
H) Don Turiddo

1) Bonanno
2) Bonanno
3) Gambino
4) Gambino
5) Gambino
6) Gambino
7) Genovese
8) Genovese

PS: Helpful hints. Although “Toto” and variations thereof are generally a diminutive of Salvatore, several of these guys did not have that as their first name…Also, at least six of these men, of the seven listed, were fully inducted members of the Mafia.

"Toto" Mirabile was a longtime Bonanno Family soldier active in Manhattan, Queens and L.I.

D-2 was Salvatore “Toto” Catalano (Bonanno)

Catalano was a Sicilian-born import of the Bonanno Family's Queens faction. He also become the recognized head, the capodecina, of the so-called "Zip faction" of the family, and later rose to the position of underboss over the entire Bonanno Family, but was forced to later step down because of the language barrier in interacting and communicating with the American-born members of the borgata.

He is most famous as a key-linchpin and coordinator in the so-called "Sicilian Connection" that imported/smuggled $1.6 Billion Dollars of heroin into the United States during the late 1960s-1970s era.

He was later convicted in the infamous Pizza Connection Trial and received 40-years in prison.

B-7 was Gaetano "Toddo" Maiorano, better known to the public as "Toddo Marino." (Genovese)

A contemporary and friend of Lucky Luciano and Vito Genovese, among many other old-timers, Toddo Marino was one of the original capodecina, assigned to the Brooklyn area. But in fact, he was considered one of the most important and powerful capos of the Luciano/Genovese Family, and for that matter, one of the most powerful mobsters in NYC, among any of the notorious "Five Families."

G-3 was Salvatore “Toddo Aurello” Avarello (Gambino)

Avarello was a low-keyed, Brooklyn-based Gambino Family capo who operated for decades. He also served as a mentor to future Gambino underboss, turned rat, Sammy Gravano.

C-4 was Peter “Little Toto” Tortorello (Gambino)

Tortorello, who was also known as "Petey Todd," was a key soldier in the Carmine "The Doctor" Lombardozzi Regime. His more notorious brother was Lombardozzi sidekick, soldier Arthur "Artie Todd" Tortorello.

The Tortorello brothers were versatile Brooklyn-based hoodlums who dabbled in many rackets. But their usual "go to" activities were stock-fraud "boiler room" operations, securities theft, and strong-arm work.

H-8 was Salvatore “Don Turiddo” Maranzano (Genovese)

This infamous early Mafia power needs no introduction. “Don Turiddo” Maranzano is legendary to underworld history. From his native Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily to the streets of America he was one of the primary moving forces in the early development of the Mafia.

F-6 was Salvatore “Toto” Capizzi (Gambino)

Born in Villa Grazia (Palermo,) Sicily, Toto Capizzi was a longtime narcotics peddler associated with many French, Italian, and American based mafiosi, but, most notably, with the Gambino Family.

After immigrating to the U.S., he resided in Brooklyn where he owned-operated a dress factory as a front, but was actually an important figure in drug smuggling into the U.S.

Capizzi completes this particular mystery mobster challenge.

I thought Maranzano was the head of his own family until his murder, after which it became the Bonanno family. He forced Luciano to betray his boss, Masseria, and rewarded Lucky by putting him in charge of that family, which became Genovese.

Maranzano was the boss of the Bonanno clan, not the Genoveses. Joe Bonanno betrayed him after a meeting with Lucky Luciano, Nick Alfano, Thomas Greco, Joe Adonis and Frank Garofalo allegedly.

You are correct, Turnbull. That was my faux pas. I didn't notice that I had inadvertently inserted Genovese instead of Bonanno for Maranzano. That was a good catch and correction.

Maranzano was, of course, the former head of the Castellammarese clan that later became known as the Bonanno Family.

PS: Here's an interesting side note about Salvatore Maranzano. He was, like most founding and future members of that borgata, born in Castellammare del Golfo. And he had allegedly been a Mafia power there, before immigrating to the U.S. His wife's maiden name was Minore, a well-known Castellammarese surname connected to a notoriously powerful blood-family dating back many years in the Trapani Province of northwestern Sicily. I suspect, that as a young man, the "Minore" connection aided Maranzano's rise to the top of the heap.
