Armand Courville met Vic Cotroni in the early 1930s while he was training the young Calabrian in professional wrestling. The two men quickly became friends and associates. From gambling houses to prostitution to money laundering to rigged elections, they climb the ranks of Montreal's organized crime together. As Vic Cotroni's alter ego, Armand Courville was undoubtedly the most powerful French-Canadian kingpin of his time.
Carmine “Lilo” Galante
Born in the United States, this criminal of Sicilian origin is number two in one of the five big New York organized crime families: the Bonannos. Responsible for extending the influence of the famiglia in Quebec, he arrived in Montreal in 1952 and took control of the Montreal underworld with the support of the Cotroni and Luigi Greco. In 1955, however, he was forced to leave the country, and Vic Cotroni then took over. Galante's ambition and thirst for power, however, got the better of him: he was assassinated in cold blood in July 1979.
Harry Feldman
Of Jewish origin, Harry Feldman emigrated from the United States to Montreal at a very young age and quickly became involved in the criminal world. In 1932, he opened a large gambling house located on Sainte-Catherine Street. The police carried out nearly 200 raids on his establishment, but he still managed to maintain his activities until 1946. This blatant example of police tolerance shocked Pax Plante who openly denounced Feldman's company at the end of the 1940s. Feldman eventually retired from the underground gambling world and died a few years later.
Max Shapiro
An inveterate gambler and central character in the Montreal Jewish underworld, Max Shapiro evolved in the underworld alongside Harry Davis in particular. He runs numerous illegal gambling and betting establishments in Montreal and also has interests in various clubs and restaurants, including Ruby Foo's and Bonfire on Décarie Boulevard. His direct associates include Carmine Galente, Vic Cotroni, Luigi Greco, Frank Petrula and Harry Ship.
Frank Petrula
Of Ukrainian origin, Frank Petrula began his criminal career alongside Luigi Greco. He first worked for Harry Davis in the mid-1940s and then rose through the ranks of the illegal world. In 1955, the federal police discovered in his residence a list of names of politicians and journalists who had received bribes from the mafia during the municipal election of October 1954. Petrula mysteriously disappeared in 1958. According to rumors , he would have been murdered...
Luigi Greco
Son of an Italian immigrant, Luigi Greco was introduced very early to the underworld world of Montreal with his friend Frank Petrula. Together, they did the four hundred rounds, and Greco found himself in prison for armed robbery at the turn of the 1940s. Upon his release from prison, he became Harry Davis' driver. At the beginning of the 1950s, he joined forces with Carmine Galante and the Cotroni brothers (Vic, Pep and Frank). Involved in a multitude of scams, including drug smuggling, he is one of the central figures in the Montreal mafia. He died accidentally in 1972.
Giuseppe “Pep” Cotroni
Giuseppe Cotroni joined the ranks of Montreal organized crime very early on alongside his older brother Vic. Convicted several times for various crimes, he became involved with Lucien Rivard and the “French Connection” in international heroin trafficking. Trapped by an American anti-drug agent, he received a 10-year prison sentence in 1959. After his release, he quickly resumed his illicit activities, but without the former glory.
