Ok guys, lets turn back time and imagine if John Gotti never would have existed or would have been part of another Family.

What would have been different with the Gambinos? Does Big Paul end up being boss until he passes away from natural causes? Does someone else take over? Would there have eventually been an attempt on Pauls life no matter what? Would the Gambinos be more powerful today than they currently are?

Discuss.

A guy like Giovanni "John" Gambino would have been a much better pick as boss but I wonder if the Ámericans would tolerate a full-blooded Sicilian at the top.

Big Paul would've went down in the Commission Case, and probably hands over the reign of Boss. There was always speculation back then that Castellano might've flipped had he made it to trial. I doubt that would've been the case. I also don't believe he would've remained boss, he only had half of the family's support while on the streets, maintaining it in prison would've been even harder. My guess is, he would've named Jimmy Brown Failla as boss, as he was probably the most powerful captain in the Family at that time and a member of Paul's inner circle. He also was Carlo's driver in his early days. Hard to gauge whether they would've been more powerful today or not. Does Jimmy Brown still get indicted on the garbage case eventually? Does he make Gotti, his underboss? Or would it have been someone like Danny Marino who was rumored to be involved with Failla in the attempted overthrowing of Gotti (and behind setting up the DeCicco hit for Vic and Gas).

One thing is for sure, I don't think Jimmy Brown is having ALL of the Family Captain's show up to his social club weekly like sitting ducks, so I'd have to imagine that the family would have been in better shape during the 90s at least until Failla gets indicted for controlling the garbage rackets.

Pasquale "Patsy" Conte would have been a good boss. The Gambino's had so many guys.

Agreed, another major earner.

James Failla was probably the best choice.
