This next challenge involves seven mafiosi, representing four different Cosa Nostra Families. Two were from the Bonanno crew, two from the Colombo crew, two from the Gambino crew, and one from the Chicago Outfit. Although each man was of Italian extraction, all seven of these men had “Irish” sounding nicknames.

Your job is to provide the real ‘first and last name’ for each man, and then match the (letter) of his nickname with the corresponding (number) of the Family he was with.

A) Frankie Martin
B) Joe Parker
C) Jimmy O’Toole
D) Joe Saunders
E) Johnny Irish
F) Mike Kelly
G) Nicky Nelson

1) Bonanno
2) Bonanno
3) Colombo
4) Colombo
5) Chicago
6) Gambino
7) Gambino

G-6 was Nicola “Nicky Nelson” Melillo (Gambino)

Nicola Melillo was a veteran Queens-based soldier of the old Gambino Family. He was most often identified as having been connected to New York City’s private sanitation industry and was the owner-operator of several garbage carting firms as well as a dominant power in the Queens County Cartmens Association, a mobbed-up trade industry group.

“Nicky Nelson” helped oversee and control the borgata’s garbage and extortion rackets and was a contemporary and close associate of such notorious garbage racketeers as Gambino capo Vincent “Jimmy Jerome” Squillante and fellow soldier Aniello “Wahoo” Mancuso.

If my memory serves me correctly, during the mid-1960s, Melillo became embroiled in a serious internal Gambino Family squabble that eventually involved higher-ups in the Family. Soon afterward, he disappeared off the face of the earth and was never seen or heard from again.

B-1 was Joseph “Joe Parker” Morsellino (Bonanno)

Joseph Morsellino was a nephew and close aide to his uncle, Vincenzo Morsellino, who, although one of the least-known, was considered one of the most respected and influential capodecina within the old Bonanno Family.

“Joe Parker” lived just a few miles away from his uncle’s home in Elmont, Long Island and regularly chauffeured Vincenzo around town to various meetings and to the Brooklyn restaurant and a private social club the old mafioso owned-operated and utilized to conduct mob meetings.

With no known arrests, the nephew made for the perfect aide and assistant. It was only after he was nailed on a police bribery charge that Morsellino’s nephew first came to the attention of organized crime investigators.

Three left to go! Anybody think they know the true identify of the remaining mystery mobsters?...then take a shot!

F-5 was Michael “Mike Kelly” Spranza (Chicago)

Born back in 1905, Mike Spranza was an early member of what later became known as the Chicago Outfit. He reputedly started out under the auspices of Al Capone. But, subsequently, during the course of his long underworld career, the authorities say he associated with, and was a contemporary of, many top “Windy City” gangsters and racketeers such as Sam (Golf Bag) Hunt, Claude (Screwy) Maddox, Ralph Pierce, Daniel and John Lardino, and the man himself, boss Anthony (Big Tuna) Accardo.

And although Spranza only had a minor local arrest record, he became important enough that over the years the Chicago Police Department, Chicago Crime Commission, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Federal Bureau of Narcotics & Dangerous Drugs, and Internal Revenue Service all kept tabs on his movements and activities.

Law enforcement officials noted that “Mike Kelly” was known to be closely associated with the Lardino brothers, especially Johnny Lardino. The Lardinos were both identified as soldiers within the Chicago Family whose specialty was labor-union racketeering and strong-arm work.

In fact, Spranza and Lardino were so close, that they became partners in legitimate business together. Authorities say the two mafiosi were known to share the ownership of the Gould Coal Company,

So far, we identified 5 of the 7 "mystery mobsters" listed, as follows:

G-6 was Nicola “Nicky Nelson” Melillo (Gambino)
B-1 was Joseph “Joe Parker” Morsellino (Bonanno)
D-2 was Joseph "Joe Saunders" Cammarano (Bonanno)
E-3 was John "Johnny Irish" Matera (Colombo)
F-5 was Michael “Mike Kelly” Spranza (Chicago Outfit)

But since nobody was able to identify the last two guys in question, I'll provide the answers, ok, fellas. There's 1 Colombo member, and 1 Gambino member left to decipher. Here they are…

C-4 was “Jimmy O’Toole” who in reality was a Brooklyn-based Colombo soldier, named James Spitaleri.
A-7 was “Frankie Martin” who was an old-time veteran of the Gambino Family’s Brooklyn faction, named Ernest Barese.

Thats it, folks!....Now onward and forward to the "Kosher Nostra"
