In Part III of our challenge, “Italians with Irish sounding nicknames” we list seven mafiosi, representing three different New York City Families. Two men were with the Colombo Family, two with the Gambino Family, and two were with the Genovese Family. Although each man was of Italian extraction, all seven of these men had “Irish” sounding nicknames.

Your job is to provide the real ‘first and last name’ for each man, and match the (letter) of his nickname, with the corresponding (number) of the Family he was affiliated with.

A) Andy Wilson
B) Mike Talley
C) Artie Price
D) Stevie Coogan
E) Eddie Costello
F) Joe Lane
G) Fats Murphy

1) Colombo
2) Colombo
3) Gambino
4) Gambino
5) Gambino
6) Genovese
7) Genovese

B-3 was Michael “Mike Talley” Caiazzo (Gambino)

Born in 1912, Mike Caiazzo was an early member of the borgata that later became popularly known as the Gambino Family. A dedicated, longtime Family soldier, Caiazzo generally operated in a low-key fashion with gambling rackets that included bookmaking, policy and dice games, primarily in Lower Manhattan and in Queens County.

A lot of boxers used to go by Irish names, too.

Yes, I agree. Thats largely because back in those early days the Irish people, in general, were more popular and favored, and having an Irish-sounding name had the benefit of helping integrate you into the mainstream society...be it the boxing world, business, politics, etc.

A-6 was Andrew “Andy Wilson” Gargiulo (Genovese)

Andy Gargiulo was identified as a formally inducted soldier of the Genovese Family. He operated in the Coney Island, Bensonhurst and Bay Ridge sections of Brooklyn as a major bookmaker and shylock. At one time, he also operated a local Italian restaurant. One afternoon, back in 2004, the normally quiet and reserved Gargiulo got into a very heated argument with his brother-in-law, fellow mob figure Preston Geritano, that turned violent, after Geritano threatened him with a bat. “Andy Wilson” ending up stabbing the volatile Geritano to death on the sidewalk, right in front of his restaurant.

F-1 was Joseph “Joe Lane” Gentile (Colombo)

Joseph Gentile was a veteran top-ranked associate and gambler, who was later formally inducted into the ranks of Brooklyn’s old Joseph Colombo Family. Although over the course of his career he dabbled in shylocking, pornography and other rackets, Gentile’s real strength and value to the Colombos was his deft abilities and success as a policy racketeer, and later, as a horse and sports bookmaker….

G-5 was Salvatore “Fats Murphy” Barbato (Gambino)

Salvatore Barbato was a low-key hoodlum that little background info is known about, who was believed to have been an inducted member of the Carlo Gambino Family.

The last one is C-2, which was Arturo “Artie Price” Misuraca (Colombo)

Arthur “Artie Price” Misuraca was a brother of Giovanni “Big Johnny” Misuraca. Both of them were early soldiers serving within the Family of boss Joseph Profaci of Brooklyn. Johnny Misuraca was later elevated to a capo post and put in charge of the borgata’s New Jersey membership, with Artie serving as one of regime’s soldiers. In the early 1960s, John also served for a time as underboss to then-acting boss, Joe Magliocco.
