A lot of boxers used to go by Irish names, too. Yes, I agree. Thats largely because back in those early days the Irish people, in general, were more popular and favored, and having an Irish-sounding name had the benefit of helping integrate you into the mainstream society...be it the boxing world, business, politics, etc.

A-6 was Andrew “Andy Wilson” Gargiulo (Genovese)
Andy Gargiulo was identified as a formally inducted soldier of the Genovese Family. He operated in the Coney Island, Bensonhurst and Bay Ridge sections of Brooklyn as a major bookmaker and shylock. At one time, he also operated a local Italian restaurant. One afternoon, back in 2004, the normally quiet and reserved Gargiulo got into a very heated argument with his brother-in-law, fellow mob figure Preston Geritano, that turned violent, after Geritano threatened him with a bat. “Andy Wilson” ending up stabbing the volatile Geritano to death on the sidewalk, right in front of his restaurant.
