Retired Genovese mob acting capo Antonio (Tony Cakes) Conigliaro, 86, was decapitated last week at a Brooklyn crosswalk when he was struck by a New York Department of Transportation vehicle. During his mafia heyday, Conigliaro worked closely with former Genovese consigliere James (Little Jimmy) Ida and legendary underboss Matthew (Matty the Horse) Ianniello, per FBI and federal-court records, and conducted his rackets in Brooklyn, Manhattan and New Jersey.
The accident that led to his death happened on June 12 at the corner of 92nd and Dahlgren Place, near Conigliaro’s apartment, immediately killing the Bay Ridge resident. “Tony Cakes” was busted for loan sharking in 2005, copped a plea and did a year in the feds. His street handle comes from his dessert catering business. Shortly after his release from prison in 2006, he took a pinch for grand larceny.
“Little Jimmy” Ida was a trusted adviser to Genovese mob don Barney Bellomo in the early years as an acting boss, per court filings in his case. Ida and Bellomo, 67, were convicted of racketeering together in a 1996 indictment, that saw Bellomo do a dozen years in the joint and Ida receiving a life sentence. “Matty the Horse” died in 2012 of heart disease.
The NY Post broke the news of Tony Cakes’ one-time status in the Westside mob in relation to his passing in the DOT crash. Conigliaro reportedly ran with Genovese and Gambino crime family elders with ties to the narcotics industry later in his life.

Anthony Conigliaro actual nickname was Tony Watches. He pops up in an informants intel describing him as a burglar who sold watches in 1966. Informant is unsure of his exact affiliation but named the two crews he hanged around with at the time but had not seen him around in a couple of months. 1973, pops up again this time with the Genoveses Little Italy, being close to the Ida brothers, other crews by a different informant. Described as a debt collector for Ida. Close to a couple of drug dealers in the Genoveses. Informant states he does not believe Conigliaro is involved in the drug trade. 1976-79 CI states that Conigliaro has been working with George Zappola in Bensonhurst since 1975 until 1976 when there was an arrest of part of the crew in Manhattan in 76. CI said Angelo Lapi and James Ida are now made members by fall of 1978. CI was informed that Ida was to be made in 77, but The Horse made Salvatore Esposito and and another member of the crew, CI states Frank Tieri told the horse he could only make two members of his crew. 1978, CI ate with James Ida, William Smurra, and Douglas Rago and was informed that Zappola would be made sometime that year. 1979, James Ida pushing for his brother Joe or Conigliaro to be made, CI was informed that with the hit on Carmine Galante the previous week, the families would not make members for awhile until things cool down, from Fat Tony. The CI mainly operated in Williamsburg and the Bronx, nothing after that except information on the Bonannos and Luchese families. May have been killed 1979 to 1980 or went to prison, no mentioned of legal problems. Conigliaro was one of the last people to see George Zappola alive in June of 1982. 1988 Joseph Ida and Tony Conigliaro were identified with Jimmy Ida as shocking down some of the vendors at the Feast of San Gennaro, but witnesses retracted or forgot their statements.
"I have this Nightmare. I'm on 5th avenue watching the St. Patrick's Day parade and I have a coronary and nine thousand cops march happily over my body." Chief Sidney Green
