I would say that the opposite is oftentimes true. In fact, oftentimes there are plenty of unknown guys who don't even make the charts. For example, let's say for instance that the Genovese Family is estimated to have 300 members. Well, what Family chart have you ever seen with 300 people on it? People like to talk like they know every wiseguy out there today, but how much do they really know? Thats a good point. I have personal experience with one guy who hijacked trucks. He spent 12 years in Leavenworth. Guess what? Not on one FBI Chart. Not one. Not even listed as an associate.

To your point: The charts at the Valachi hearings, which were considered the gold standard at the time, were based almost exclusively by info provided by Joe Valachi. He was a nobody, too low down in the borgata to have a good idea of the total membership--much less the other families--and the FBI had been ignoring Mafia until then.

People like to talk like they know every wiseguy out there today, but how much do they really know? Absolutely. Especially the further you go back in time. I had a family member who was already a very old man when I was a kid in the early 80s. He was so old that he was in the can for bootlegging when he was a young man. I’m pretty confident he got his button before the books closed. I’ve never seen his name anywhere. There’s probably well over a hundred wise guys who are completely lost to history. And they would have preferred it that way.
