I get what you're saying but at one time it wasn't always all about the money. Some joined for criminal prestige, others joined for brotherhood, still others joined just because they liked the idea of belonging to a secret criminal organization. Even Philly mobster Joe Sodano said, "isn't it great, that you could be a member, and nobody knows?" And of course there are those who joined for money. But if it was only about money, you wouldn't have had people paying money to join. That means that membership at one time was very desirable, excluding the money aspect. This ended in the 1980s when the feds exposed all mob secrets helped by the bosses that with their actions led many mobsters to flip for avoid being killed. Plus the old school mobsters like Lonardo in Cleveland,Frattiano in Los Angeles and Charles Porter doesnt want to die in jail. The problem started after the mafia become become americanized. In sicily there was 2 way: fight or die - no State with Witsec. In 1970s - 1980s the american mob wasnt more a brotherhood but a way to made money with the union or the heroin after thanks to the italian neighborhoods still remained with a good recruitment pool. In 2024 with no unions,no italian hoods what remains is the bottom of the barrel.
