On March 17, 1993 Jean-Louis Fargette was assassinated in Italy. The man nicknamed "The Great" and who reigned over the Var milieu for a long time.

Valletta Cemetery, March 24, 1993. Nearly 2,000 people came to say goodbye. A funeral wreath sets the scene, worthy of a Coppola film: "You are the boss and you always will be . "

March the next year.

Two men were charged Thursday with the murder of a member of Parliament who had launched a campaign against organized crime in the south of France.

Yann Piat was shot and killed Feb. 25 in her car by a man riding on the back of a motorcycle near her home in Hyeres on the French Riviera.

Her driver was wounded.

A judge in Toulon, about 6 miles (10 km) miles from Hyeres, Thursday evening charged Epifanio Pericolo, a 29-year-old Italian restaurateur, and Denis Labadie, 27, with 'assassination and attempted assassination' in connection with the attack, court sources said.

Labadie is alleged to have fired the shots from the passenger seat while Pericolo drove the motorcycle.

The two men have been linked with Jean-Louis Fargette, an organized crime godfather on the Riviera who was killed last year in San Remo, Italy, where he had gone to escape French authorities.

The sources said police Thursday released Fargette's three brothers from custody in Toulon a day after detaining them for questioning in connection with Piat's murder.

Piat, 44, a centrist member of Parliament, had launched a campaign against organized crime in the French Riviera. Friends said she had recently received death threats.

That is interesting m2w !

In 2020 there was the "mafia-style execution" - two shots to the head, fired with the victim kneeling - of "Joseph" (Giuseppe) Fedele, 60, a drug trafficker of Calabrian origins living in Beausoleil, on the French Riviera, a sort of hinge man between the "milieu" of the Var (the local mafia) and the 'ndrine from beyond the Alps. “Close to the Fargette clan”,..

Fedele's body was found on October 21. He was identified by an acquaintance, Fortunato Foti, a drug courier between Spain and Italy who emerged in anti-mafia investigations. He had an appointment with the victim on the day of his disappearance. As for Fedele, he was convicted in Nice for drugs and running clandestine gambling dens. His wife Marie Clotilde Regnier is the daughter of the legendary godfather of Toulon Loulou Regnier. The boss's other sons ended badly: Michel was shot in 1998, Jean Claude in 2012.

Louis Regnier (known as "Loulou" or "the lord of Sablettes"), is a figure of French organized crime , born on November 25, 1922 in Hyères and died o nMarch 15, 2003 in La Seyne-sur-Mer 1 .

Biography
Born in 1922 in Hyères , he came from a wealthy family that made its fortune in insurance. After a decent education, he started out in crime in Paris . In 1958, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a pimp from Grenoble. However, he was acquitted following an appeal in cassation. In 1961 and 1962, he was placed under house arrest in Corsica , where his mother was from. "Loulou Régnier" took over the prostitution sector in La Seyne-sur-Mer , where there were many bars and nightclubs, and became a prominent figure. Louis Régnier, who owned various nightclubs and restaurants in the South-East, as well as a nightclub in Abidjan, had kept a clean criminal record throughout his life despite several arrests and indictments in drug trafficking and pimping cases.

Close to Corsican and Marseille circles , he supported the election campaigns of the senator-mayor, Maurice Arreckx . Despite the numerous international trafficking operations ( Germany and Belgium ) in which he certainly participated, he died with a clean criminal record in 2003. He spent a long period of preventive detention on suspicion of drug trafficking .

His friend and mentor, Philippe Gratius, known as "the little tattooed one", a young boxing hopeful with a promising career, whom he himself propelled into the underworld, would soon arrive at the forefront of the Var scene, particularly during violent robberies in many bank branches in the region. His name would also hit the headlines during two settling of scores in the 80s without the justice system being able to implicate him. Despite his young age, the man who is described as very intelligent would soon make his mark in the Var underworld. After a long stay behind bars, he disappeared from circulation and would never be heard from again.

Fargette spent part of his childhood in New Caledonia where his father, originally from the Jura, was a soldier. In 1959, the family moved back to Toulon.

Many French outlaws/criminals were send to those Islands, their offspring today are still more or less proud of their notorious history I saw in a docu about the recent unrest in New Caledonia.

The Italian anti-mafia judicial directorate has recorded four operations involving the 'ndrangheta that targeted French territory in 2019 [21] : three operations led to the arrest of 'ndrangheta fugitives wanted in Italy; one operation targets a drug importation network. The trend has been relatively stable over the last five years with around two operations per year leading either to the capture of a fugitive or to the dismantling of a drug importation or money laundering network. Of all eleven Italian operations against the 'ndrangheta involving French territory from 2015 to 2019, eight brought investigators to the Côte d'Azur, particularly to Vallauris. When confined to the PACA region, mafia activity also appears relatively stable with around 10% of the cases handled each year by the Specialised Interregional Jurisdiction of Marseille allegedly involving the 'ndrangheta. Of the six operations revealing drug trafficking, five identified flows from Spain to Italy and demonstrated the role of Ventimiglia and the Ligurian coast as a hub.
