Wasn't he the guy that ordered to have acid thrown in the face of that reporter? Guy was evil. Fleming_Ave, let me correct what I originally wrote... I explained it improperly.... Yes, Johnny Dio was believed with have masterminded the plot behind the attack on newspaper labor columnist Victor Riesel. Although small time hood Abe Telvi was the actual guy who threw the acid in Riesel's face. Telvi had been paid a small sum of money to throw sulphuric acid in a guys face. But Telvi wasn't told the true identity of his target. He had no idea it would be such a prominent, important figure. He did the job and then quickly went into hiding. But once he discovered who he had attacked, he quickly demanded a lot more money for his "work" and the problems he now faced, his silence, cooperation, etc. They lured him back, and then shot him dead. Telvi never even got the chance to contemplate spilling the beans. They made sure to clip him. But this was a fast moving investigation that quickly led to the exposure of those involved. And before long a few of the lesser participants in the scheme started cracking and talking. Johnny Dio was eventually arrested along with his brother, soldier Tommy Dio, their fellow Lucchese soldier Charles (Charlie) Tuso, and several small-time mob associates from the Lower East side, including Gondolfo (Sheikie) Miranti, Domenico (Nicky) Bando, and brothers Joe and Charlie Carlino. This happened around 1956. A few of them got convicted, but I know that Johnny and Tommy skated. I think Tuso got away also if my memory serves me. PS: As I'm sure you're aware, this incident and the subsequent investigation that came out of it is much more involved than can be briefly explained here. There were lots of twists and turns to it. But this is a general overview.
