The mad dog died, running away.

He was one of two that went down that night in Kansas City, Wednesday, April 5th, 1950. To this day, no one knows who killed them or why in a city that wasn’t even in the state of Kansas. It was and is located in Missouri, as the city was created some years before the state of the same name.

Each victim shot four times, in the head. Small handgun, a .32 calibre, mostly the kind of gun a woman would carry in her purse. From a hundred feet, the round probably bounce off a hard head. Up real close, deadly as a harpoon.

The two dead were part of the city’s criminal underworld, dominated by the Italian Mafia who maybe arrived as early as 1912. The first manifestations of this secret society, across cities in America is best described as a classic Churchillian citation: “a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.”
