Smells Like Teen Spirit is that great, it's just overplayed and overplayed. If it was heard only as much say All Apologies, another great one, then it could probably easily be declared the best one. Because it' so hyped and overplayed it's over-analyzed.

Kurt Cobain. Hands down. No contest. Of course, I'm slightly biased. Okay, I'm really biased. I'm in love with Kurt. And I've only heard a handful of Tupac songs.

The reason people say Smells Like Teen Spirit "defines" are generation is because it was the MTV flavor of the week. All the posers who wanted to be cool just listened to SLTS and bandwagoned like Tupac posers listen to Hit 'Em Up and say they are a fan.
Kurt expressed himself in many sides (disagreeing to Pat) and a lot more then in Smells Like Teen Spirit. I can name dozens of songs better then it, among them: Serve the Servants, You Know You're Right, Heart-Shaped Box, Rape Me, Lithium, Something in the Way, Drain You, Paper Cuts, Polly, Dumb, Pennyroyal Tea, All Apologies, Scoff, Sifting, etc.

Pat, could you post the lyrics to "Changes," if that's your pick for best Tupac song. Obviously, it's hard to find Cobain's best work. Best song on a personal level, In Bloom. On a broad level, Lithium, SLTS, I don't know.

Changes isn't his best lyrical sign. It's his most influential song. "Changes"
Come on come on I see no changes wake up in the morning and I ask myself "Is life worth living? Should I blast myself?" I'm tired of being poor & even worse I'm black my stomach hurts so I'm looking for a purse to snatch Cops give a damn about a Negro pull the trigger, kill a nigga, he's a hero Give the crack to the kids, who the hell cares? one less hungry mouth on the welfare First ship 'em dope & let 'em deal the brothers give 'em guns, step back, watch 'em kill each other "It's time to fight back." that's what Huey said 2 shots in the dark, now Huey's dead I got love for my brother, but we can never go nowhere unless we share with each other We gotta start making changes learn to see me as a brother instead of 2 distant strangers and that's how it's supposed to be How can the Devil take a brother if he's close to me? I'd love to go back to when we played as kids but things changed, and that's the way it is
Come on come on That's just the way it is Things'll never be the same That's just the way it is aww yeah
I see no changes, all I see is racist faces misplaced hate makes disgrace to races We under--I wonder what it takes to make this one better place, let's erase the wasted Take the evil out the people they'll be acting right because both black and white is smoking crack tonight and only time we chill is when we kill each other it takes skill to be real, time to heal each other And although it seems heaven sent We ain't ready to see a black President It ain't a secret, don't conceal the fact the penitentiary's packed, and it's filled with blacks But some things will never change try to show another way but you staying in the dope game Now tell me what's a mother to do being real don't appeal to the brother in you You gotta operate the easy way "I made a G today" But you made it in a sleazy way selling crack to the kid " I gotta get paid," Well hey, well that's the way it is
[Chorus]
[Talking:] We gotta make a change... It's time for us as a people to start making some changes. Let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live and let's change the way we treat each other. You see the old way wasn't working, so it's on us to do what we gotta do...to survive.
And still I see no changes can't a brother get a little peace? It's war on the streets & the war in the Middle East Instead of war on poverty, they got a war on drugs so the police can bother me And I ain't never did a crime I ain't have to do But now I'm back with the blacks giving it back to you Don't let 'em jack you up, back you up, crack you up, and pimp slap you up You gotta learn to hold ya own they get jealous when they see ya with ya mobile phone But tell the cops they can't touch this I don't trust this When they try to rush, I bust this That's the sound of my tool you say it ain't cool my mama didn't raise no fool And as long as I stay black, I gotta stay strapped & I never get to lay back because I always got to worry about the pay backs some buck that I roughed up way back coming back after all these years rat-tat-tat-tat-tat that's the way it is Not including his poetry, this is probably his best song, based on lyrics. I had a hard time picking one and debated with Me Against the World and Unconditional Love. I think I'm going to go with Unconditional Love. (What y'all want?) Unconditional Love (no doubt) Talking bout the stuff that don't wear off It don't fade It'll last for all these crazy days These crazy nights Whether you wrong or you right I'm a still love you Still feel you Still there for you No matter what (hehe) You will always be in my heart With unconditional love
[Verse One:]
Come listen to my truest thoughts, my truest feelings All my peers doing years beyond drug dealing How many caskets can we witness Before we see it's hard to live This life without God, so we must ask forgiveness Ask mama why I got this urge to die Witness the tears falling free from my eyes Before she could reply Though we were born without a silver spoon My broken down TV show cartoons in my living room (hey) One day I hope to make it A player in this game Mama don't cry, long as we try Maybe things change Perhaps it's just a fantasy A life where we don't need no welfare shit with our whole family Maybe it's me that caused it The fighting and the hurting In my room crying cause I didn't want to be a burden Watch mama open up her arms to hug me And I ain't worried about a damn thing, with unconditionl love
[Chorus: 2x]
In this game, the lesson's in your eyes to see Though things change, the future's still inside of me We must remember that tomorrow comes after the dark So you will always be in my heart, with unconditional love
Just got the message you've been calling all week Been out here hustling on these streets, ain't had a chance to speak But you know, with you and me it's on G We could never be enemies, cause you been such a good friend to me Where would I be without my dogs No wonder why when times get hard Cause it ain't easy being who we are Driven by my ambitions, desire higher positions So I proceed to make Gs, eternally in my mission Is to be more than just a rap musician The elevation of today's generation If could make 'em listen Prison ain't what we need, no longer stuck in greed Time to plan and strategize, my family's gotta eat When we make something out of nothing No pleasure in the suffering, neighborhood would be good If they could cut out all the busting The liquor and the weed, the cussing Sending love out to my block The struggle never stops (unconditional love)
[Chorus]
I'll probably never understand ya ways With everyday, I swear I hear ya Trying to change your ways while getting paid at the same time Just had a baby with the same eyes Something inside, please let me die these are strange times How come I never made it Maybe it's the way I played it in my heart I knew one day I gotta be a star My hopes and all my wishes So many vivid pictures, and all the currency I'll never even get to see This fast life soon shatters Cause after all the lights and screams Nothing but my dreams matter Hoping for better days Maybe a peaceful night, baby don't cry Cause everything gonna be alright Just lay your head on my shoulder Don't worry about a thang baby Girl I'm a soldier Never treated me bad, no matter who I was You still came with that, unconditional love
[Chorus]
"After every dark night, there's a bright day right after that. No matter how hard it gets, stick your chest out, keep your head up, and handle it." -Tupac Shakur

I'll never deny Tupac's being a lyrical genius. He was before his time. And I'm not biased by any means. I don't have a favorite genre, or a genre I prefer. I like songs that I like, whether it's rock, rap, country, it doesn't matter. So, as an unbiased person, I have to say, I believe Kurt Cobain was a better lyricist, his songs were deeper, and his music touched more people. My opinion, nothing more. I've touched on some points, as have everybody else. I'll leave it at that.

I found this interesting article... perhaps there is a racial divide with music preference... Kurt Cobain vs Master P

There is? You're acting like I'm a Black guy living in the projects. Let it be known that I'm White and I live, relatively, in the burbs. It took you 2 days to come up with something totally irrelevant? Master P is the worst rapper alive and should be put out of his misery. His label just went bankrupt last year. Now, I'm waiting for your realy reply. 'Kurt Cobain Vs. Tupac Shakur' BTW, I REALLY hope you're not even trying to say that comparing Master P to Cobain is like comparing Tupac to Cobain. I await your argument, which is obviously nothing right now. I'll check back later. -Pat

For one, that wasn't my response. And second, I'm not talking about racial divide in music preference as if you're black, I was just expanding on something we talked about earlier about whites and blacks liking different music, and I wanted to post that to show that there is a divide. It wasn't my response to this debate, it was just something extra.
And I never said anything about Master P, which if you read the article which I bet you didn't, you'd know it had absolutely nothing to do with this Master P guy, it was about the white youth knowing of white music stars, and blacks knowing of the blacks, but the two didn't know about eachother. The Cobain-Master P thing wasn't the topic, and it's just a coincidence Cobain was there. I was just pointing out an article on racial division on music preference, as it relates to culture.
