Seeds of Honor - Book I

Everyone knew 'Larry-2-fingers'.And everyone loved him. He was Don Torello's right hand and the most efficient capo in the family. You only had to meet him once to understand he didnt get his nickname fo having 2 fingers. That nickname was given to him as he enjoyed to cut his victams fingers off one by one as they lay there.
he "made his bones" back in the 50's when the war with the Cuezo crime family was at its peak. The war started when Don Torello found out that one of the soldiers in the family had badly beaten one of the Dons daughters in a local club in the Bensonhurst part of Brooklyn. When The Don recieved the news, he felt the blood flowing fast through his body. But then, his oldest son Carmine Got together a group of buttons and Soliders to plan the revenge on the Cuezo family. As they sat down for the meeting Carmine noticed that his father had a look on his face that Carmine had never seen before. Carmine began the meeting and as he began to speak his father rose up out of the chair and told everybody to get up and leave. When it was just the Don and Carmine alone together the Don Said "I want no impulsive actions taken on this matter. As angry as I am, we must realize that our actions must be thought out and well planned, for this job can only be handled by someone who is not only clever, but also close to the Cuezo family, maybe some insider who is not happy with the family. This way We may learn their ways and daily routine, and then we shall organize a hit that will make NY shudder. "
"The most important thing, - Carmine said, - is that we don't make a mistake chosing such a person. I have heard that recently Don Cuezo had a disagreement with his executioner, that scary guy named Paolo. People say that when he confronts is enemies he doesn't give them time to pray, just whacks them. Also Paolo's brother works in our man 'Larry 2-fingers' casino. It is known that disagreement between Paolo and his Don was of a serious nature. I guess he wished to marry Elizabeth Cuezo, but her father said that he would rather be dead than see them married.Besides she was still very young, not to mention Paolo was 35 already, 15 years older than she is. And had such a scary rep! In short," Carmine said, "Don Cuezo cursed him shouting so loudly that buttonmen outside heard much of it, and one of them, bodyguard to Paolo's brother, was that night at the casino with him, and told the whole gossip to Larry. That's where I know it from," Carmine added. "I think we must contact him through Larry. Talk to Larry in person, and give him a hint of the job. If he approaches Paolo's brother..."
Don Torello interrupted him suddenly:
"Look, Carmine, what if we propose Paolo to kidnap the girl for him? If he goes on with us, of course? That would be a move! Cuezos injured my daughter - I will injure their daughter! An eye for an eye! What d'ya think?"
Carmine said"It could be trickey, but how we ganna get close to her if Paulo doesn't agree. I know he's desparate for revenge, but he's hot-headed and stupid. Only Larry can put business sense into his head" reasoned Carmine. Don Torello, though dulled by old age, was quick to add "We shall be fortunate if the girl returns his feelings! Then she will consent to run away herself..."
But at that moment the phone rang and Carmine listened. His face changed colour.
-"We are late!- He said. -They run away together today! It's vital that we find them before Cuezo does! If we help Paolo he will have no choice. I think we must offer him our friendship".
Carmine called caporegime Mario into his room and asked him to make arrangements for Paulo's safety. "Be careful not to let this plan known to Cuezo family at any cost. Or it will spoil all our plans" warned Carmine. Mario knew that Larry was the only man who could safely approach Paolo through his brother, so he called him by special phone. When Larry heard his orders they stunned him. He was considered a good wiseguy, but never yet was trusted with anything so important. He felt that it's his chance to rise in the family, but the difficulty of this mission was so overwhelming that he could not reply for a moment. Mary, Larry's wife, was listening to their conversation all the while standing behind the door. She gestured at him silently to agree for the mission. Larry trusted her more than anyone in this world. He coldn't help smiling: did she really think that he had any choice? That he could refuse to follow his capo's orders? When Larry left, he sullenly looked at her and proceeded to kiss her gently.

Larry could hardly sleep that night; worries of the new responsibility kept him awake. Next day, he drove to his brother's house early in the morning.Larry found his brother in a drowsy state, the effect of previous night's excess drinking was still showing. Larry managed to Wake him and get down to buisness. Larry said: "You know everyone, I saw you last night embracing Paolo's brother. He will not trust me, he must know I'm working for Torellos. But you may approach him and tell I have a real deal to propose. Paolo's dead if Cuezo finds him. Alone he cannot hide long. Only people who can help him are Torellos! You must do it quickly because they might come at us quicker so try to arrange my meeting with that guy."
Larry's brother succeeded in his negotiations, and an hour later Larry was talking to Paolo's brother."You know Paulo is in danger and I think I can help him" Larry explained.
"Why do you want to help him Larry, I mean what do you gain from it?" asked Paulo's brother, suspiciously studying Larry's face. "How do I know you won't betray us?"
Larry said, "You must know that I work for Torellos. The war between the two families is about to begin and it is going to get nasty. If we make a deal, we both benefit" Larry proposed. Paulo's brother hesitted for a moment, but finally nodded his head in agreement. "Be ready with Paulo and his girl."Larry said, " My men will come in the evening and take all of you to a safe place. I will come and meet you then ."
"No, -said Paolo's brother- You must come yourself with your people. How can we know otherwise that they're your people? Not Cuezo's? And we must be quick. I'm afraid they might trace us earlier... What about - one hour later?"
"OK, Larry said, I'll come but first i got to call the don and so he did. Don Torello told him through caporegime not to waste time. So an hour later Larry was approaching a small tenement in Bronx neighborhood ,arraging the place for the big meeting that was about to take place.

End of Chapter 1.

CHAPTER TWO

The meet was set for 2am.
Paulo was nervous. He had decided not to tell his girl about this meeting.
"What's the matter? Where are you going at this odd time?" she asked with a lot of concern and fear.
"Lizzy,- he said, a strange gentleness showing on his frightening features, as always when he addressed her,- I'm going to see a friend. We need friends now. Your father is looking for us, and we must get the car ready, so I could make it on time.
Your father's poeple will recognize the car if I drive it downtown, he's got his people all over the place! They'll be on to us in no time!
so you gotta help me paint it...or better yet...im going down the parking lot to get us some new wheels, give me a whistle if someone is coming... "
But Lizzy was not so easily decieved. She could see he was afraid to betray something. Her love enabled her to notice every change in his look or voice, and she said:
"Stop treating me as a silly kid! I see that we are in danger, but don't tell me that you shall go out and paint our car in the middle of day! Come on, what is it?"
Paolo hesitated.
"Are you going to help me or not?" - He asked and left the place without waiting for a reply.
There were about 30 cars in the parking lot.
Paolo noticed a good looking Nissan, then he realized it must belong to that rich bastard who made a move on his wife. Paolo smiled. In less than 2 minutes he was already inside the car, trying to start the engine, but then he thought better of it.
He flinched back because of a sudden suspicion. That guy, the car's owner. He was winking at Lizzy quite openly in his presence, he was asking for trouble. Why? They were second day in this tenement, nobody knew them. Could he be a spy of Don Cuezo? Knowing that he was revengeful even in small things, they might expect that he'll pick this car!
Paolo jumped out and looked under the car. He guessed it right. The bomb was there. He was not religious, but he couldn't help but start praying, how lucky he was to have noticed this.
He hurried back to his home, knowing that staying there any longer would be dangerous. "Just do as I say Lizzy, follow me and don't ask me any questions". Elizabeth agreed reluctantly. Paulo decided to go to the place where meeting with Don Torello was arranged. There were still 6 hours left for the meeting, but Larry's men were already present there.
They haven't unpacked their things yet, so it took a few minutes to get ready. Lizzy cleverly suggested that they should lock the door and leave the radio turned on.
At the same time Larry came to the place of meeting. He felt uncomfortable and wondered what to say to Paolo.
He didn't know much about him, and tried to guess what kind of argument could persuade him better. He was surprised and relieved at the same time, when the door opened suddenly and Stan "The Fixer" entered the room.
He was called "The Fixer" becasue there was no problem that he couldn't fix. At what costs - is another question...
Paolo's here! - he shouted. With the girl. He says, they were found, nearly exploded on a bomb! They are in the next room with all their stuff. Go talk to him.
Larry ran into the next room and saw a touching sight... Elizabeth was obviously scared and Paolo held her in his embrace with gentleness that you'd never suspect him capable of.
"Paolo, I want to have a word with you alone. Can you step out for a moment?" Larry said. "Excuse us, lady".
When they were alone in the next room, Larry asked Paolo what happened. Being told everything he said:
"You must understand: Torellos are not gonna ask you to go and blow the brains of your father in law. Unless it is your own wish, of course. - He smiled. - There are many enemies and many ways you can help us in this war. We offer you shelter and support to your wife and future kids whatever happens to you, if you chose to be loyal to Don Torello."
"I love her much more than I do my own life, - said Paolo seriously.
As they were talking, the window in the room shattered suddenly by a bullet from outside the room. It narrowly missed Paulo and he immediately leapt for safety behind a wooden cupboard. Larry ducked, quickly drew his weapon out and fired twice through the window at a man who tried to run.
The man fell down and Larry ran into the next room. His men were out already. "I know him, he is one of Cuezos' people." - Said Stan "The Fixer", coming in.
"Paolo, did you check if there was a tail on you?" - asked Larry. "God, I was so scared for her that I forgot to do it!" - shouted Paolo. "Let's get outta here, - Larry said.- Who knows how many of them are on the way."
"OK. -Paolo said grimly. - I agree to help you out. Just don't tell Lizzy we are fighting against her father - it will be hard for her."
When they were getting in their cars, Larry sighed with relief, looked at the dead body that was laying in pool of blood in the middle of empty street and, for the first time, it occured to him that today he had killed a man.

CHAPTER THREE

As months went by, more men from either side were killed. Larry gradually rose to more important positions in Torello family. Paulo became his right hand man in his operations against Don Cuezo. Elizabeth stood by his side eventhough she was torn by the choice between her love and her family.

It was the new year's eve and Larry was celebrating it with his wife and his new born son. There was a tasty looking cake and a bunch of presents for everyone. They planned a quiet evening. When they were at their table already, the telephone rang.
"Who can it be?-Larry said. -Maybe someone wants to congratulate us already?"
He picked the phone and to his surprise heard the voice of Marco "The big hand", one of Don Cuezo's enforcers.
"We have him. If you do anything rash, we'll whack him. Your Capo Mario's son. If you want him back - do as I say. Get me Paulo".
"I cannot do that"
"Then the kid is dead. You don't want that, do you?...do you,Larry?"
"Marco, don't forget Elizabeth..."
"Elizabeth? Old Don renounced her. He said he has no daughter anymore. You may tell her!" - he laughed savagely.
After the shortest possible time Larry was in Mario's house. Mario Vandestini was a legend of underworld. One of the most cruel and insidious capos, he had a lot of liberty in the family, and only because of his long standing friendship with Don Torello he prefered to remain his capo instead of separating into his own family. Now he was oppressed.
"I'll go there alone. I'll go to my boy. I'm bigger than Paolo. They'll consent."
"They acted against the law,- Larry said,- we may ask Families to interfere!"
"Some families are backing Marco, they want to eliminate me and Torello family. Others don't want to get involved" said Mario.
Larry nodded his head,"Then I have a suggestion. If it is okay with you and Don Torello, I'd propose to start negotiations. We may offer other hostage instead of Christiano. While we shall negotiate, we may learn where they hold them, and a small operation..."
"No risk for my boy!" - shouted Mario. - propose them to take me instead of him. I'm important in the family, they won't refuse."
"Let's try to talk to the Don",-Larry said.
Christiano Vandestini was 12. He was a quiet and mild boy who never gave anything out. He appeared to be rather observing than acting, and his kindness and thoughtfullness instead of usual boyish activity had persuaded his father early on that Christiano is no gangster.
Fortunately, he had eldest son, by no means kind person called Alfonso, from his first marriage with a non-Italian woman. She died from unhappy accident under strange consequences shortly after rumours that she had an affair .
From his second marriage with a girl from Italian Mafia family he had two kids - daughter Angelina, 14, and Christiano.
That evening Christiano went out with other boys to buy candy at a shop nearby. Three men arrived in a car and one of them, a man in his forties, stepped out.
"Christiano, look here!"
He glanced behind and saw two men approaching him. He shouted "Run!" to the other boys when the men jumped forward, grasped his hands and a big leather glove shut his mouth. In a second he was carried towards the waiting car.
He was clever enough not to make a mistake trying to look at Angelina for help. She heard it from Cristiano's friends and was coming almost running towards them. She was at a distance and Christiano was praying they wouldn't notice her. He knew that the men were armed and he could put both of them in trouble. Luckily for him, they hurriedly drove away before Angelina could reach them.
Inside the car, a man stuffed a piece of cloth into Christiano's mouth, tied his hands behind with a rope and forcefully pushed him to crawl underneath the back seat. Christiano soon fainted in suffocation.
When he regained his senses, he found himself tied to a chair and saw a man, whom he later came to know as Marco, talking to Larry on the phone. He pretended to be still unconscious and heard everything. He understood that he is a hostage and for some time he is sure to be alive. That meant, as he was by no means a passive person, that something could be attempted.
He tried the rope and, having little hands, managed to move them a little. He was too excited to sleep, but several hours persuaded him that it was useless.
When it seemed to be morning (the curtains were closed) two buttonmen came into the room where he sat. He had no cloth in his mouth, so he asked to let him to go to the toilet. Soldier cursed trying to manage the rope and finally cut it, saying to another man:
"We'll just chain him to the nearest thing and make him beg for mercy until..."
Here they were interrupted by Marсo, who suddenly entered and said: What's going on?
-That damn rope! What am i - supposed to tie him again everytime he goes...
-OK, said Marco. Chaining him is a good idea. I'll give you handcuffs.
So Christiano was liberated from the rope and led into a long corridor, where he saw the remains of furniture and dirty carpet. He saw two doors, one of them closed, another leading to a room where he saw a lot of guns lying on the floor, and several mattresses where soldiers probably slept. At the end of the corridor, where the place of his destination was situated, there also was a staircase leading downstairs, as he could surmise, the only way out. Through the window he saw the yard of the building with two cars in it, a wooden fence and gate.
When he was in his room again, chained to a leg of a big case, he thought of a clever plan.
He waited till the night and begun to work with his handcuffs. His hands were small and finally he managed to get free.
Carefully he ventured out of his room. The doors were both closed. He went on, but at the top of the stairs he stopped, hearing voices coming from below. There was a noisy junket obviously, because the voices sounded drunk. He didn't go downstairs, thinking that the exit must be guarded. But then, if they are downstairs, there's nobody in the room with arms!
He returned and tried carefully to open the door. It was unlocked.
He was clever enough not to touch the guns laying on the floor. He opened the case that was standing in the corner of the room and was filled with arms too, and chose a machine-gun and a magazine.
He didn't know how to load it, so he begun to study loaded guns on the floor when he heard some voices coming from behind the wall. He understood that someone is accending the stairs and quickly ran to his room. He threw the gun under the case and quickly thrust his hand in handcuffs.
Before the morning he awoke and managed to load the gun.
The same evening was busy for Torello family. They finally managed to arrange negotiations between Marco, on Cuezo side, and Larry, on Torellos. Paolo wished to help, but Don Torello said positively that he will be killed once they saw him, and therefore must stay at home. There could be no disobeyance to the Don's order.
The negotiations, of course, were only part of a clever trap. They had people in the phone station and they traced Marco's call. They knew where Christiano was kept. When Marco will go to the negotiations with Larry, he will take some of his people with him, and at the same time Mario wth his soldiers would take those who remained in the house by surprize and liberate his son.
Sure, it was a dangerous operation, but they agreed that it was worth the effort and risk.
Mario's men dressed like street entertainers and reached the place where Christiano was kept. They were under special instruction to assess the number of men guarding the place and inform Mario. They started singing loudly outside the house. One of the guards opened the window from the first floor and shouted at them:
"Hey! Shut the fuck up im trying to sleep!" - that comment really sounded insufficient, and he added: "Get outta here! If you wanna stay alive!"
Three more men showed in the yard going towards the gate. Mario's men went back to their car and drove back to meet Mario. But when they came they found nobody at the meeting place. Worried, they went to the place where the peace-talk was arranged, hoping to get to Larry. When they reached this place they were right in time to help Larry and his men out in a street battle against Cuezo's troops. Half of them were killed, half wounded, including Larry himself. When the battle was finished and remaining Cuezo people disappeared in a car, they didn't chase them.
-It was a trap.-said Larry.- Marco cut the talk short after it begun, and went back, maybe he suspected something. I managed to notify Mario, he must be the first one to arrive, but I'm not sure he and his men will finish their work before Marco will be there.
-How many men has he with him? - said Stan, who was heading the group.
-Two...How many men are there around the kid?- Larry asked worriedly.
--"Three or four, maybe more".
--"All of you go there right away, I want the kid safe. Understood? I want to keep up my word with Don."...."Come on hurry up, what are you guys waiting for..."
--"We can handle this Larry, you don't need to come with us. You are injured badly"
--"Don't worry..ah..mmm.." before Larry could complete, he collapsed.
Stan ordered his men to go ahead. He stayed back, lifted Larry and placed him on the back seat of his car. He drove directly to Larry's house. larry's wife, Mary, was shocked when she saw Larry in that state.
"What happened to him?" she asked.
"Marco. Those bastards decieved us, it was a trap. Get the doctor!"

At the same time Mario and his two men, hiding behind their car, were exchanging gunfire with the soldiers hidden in the house. They managed to kill or wound one of them, but then another one threw grenade close to their car. Mario saw him in time, and cried to others to run away. He jumped forward covered by the smoke of explosion and burning car, noticing that both his men were dead, and got into the house. He shot one man to death and rushed upstairs. He opened all doors, and finally found the room where his son was kept. He jumped in - and froze in horror. Christiano sat on the floor, chained to the case, and Marco himself was standing near, holding his gun to the child's head.
-I was waiting for you. - he said. - How stupid of you to make such a plan! - He grimaced. - I believe your brave friend Larry must be dead now, I left him to negotiate with my best guys!
- Let him go. He's just a child. Take me instead, do what you like with me!
- Put your gun on the floor and make two steps back. OK. Now - you think I won't kill you? Heh? Why?
He stretched his hand and fired in Mario's shoulder, then another. He was now in several steps from Christiano, not paying attention to the boy, obviously expecting no danger from that quarter. But Mario suddenly glanced at him and was stunned by what his son did at this moment. He slowly and carefully freed his hand and took a huge machine gun from under the case. It was too heavy for him, and he used the case to support it.
In the next moment walls of the room were covered with Marco's blood and brains.
Christiano rose and opened the door. The corridor was empty, and he motioned his father to follow him. Mario was absolutely speechless. His son went before him, carrying the gun, which seemed strangely big in comparison with the slim body of 12-year-old child.
When they reached the stairs, Christiano saw 6 men entering through the door downstairs, he put his gun on the rail and riddled them with bullets. Then he ran down and frisked them, until he found the key from their car. He and Mario, who was bleeding a lot, jumped into the car and Christiano switched the motor. His legs were too short, but he managed to sit closer to the wheel and they sped off.
- I didn't know you can drive, -Mario said.
- Larry taught me from time to time, in the yard.
- Are you OK?
- Are you?
- Yes, but you are only a child of 12, and - you've just massacred 7 people without a single change in your face...
- I'm Vandestini. We are never children, you must know. We are born murderers.
He smiled at his father, who seemed deeply in thought, and stepped on gas.

END OF CHAPTER THREE.
