Ok,I saw the 7 Samurai...and I want to know what do you think about the rest of his movies.
Anything else worth watching?

I want to see Yojimbo,I heard its a good movie.
I understand that Kurosawa blamed Sergio Leone for "stealing" the movie story to use it in "Fistful of Dollars",supposed to be a "pirated remake of Yojimbo".
Kurosawa sued Leone about it and won.
And Kurosawa wrote him a letter sayin "Mr.Leone,I saw your film.It is a very good film but it is my film."
What I dont understand is how much of a story is there in 'Fistfull of Dollars' anyway?
Well,I just hope Yojimbo can also deliver great lines like "Get 3 coffins ready"

Anyway, enough with the stories -let me know if you like any of his movies!

RASHOMON is his best in my opinion. Better than "Seven Samurai". Though I still haven't seen "Yojimbo"

How am I not myself?

I wanna see his films so much. Most of them are Criterions so they are hard to get. I hate myself for passing up buying "Throne of Blood." I wanna see,

Seven Samurai
Rashomon
Ikiru
Yojimbo (Fistful of Dollars was based on it)
Tsubaki Sanjûrô
Throne of Blood
Ran
Kagemusha

Seven Samurai is the only film IMO that I think is just as good as The Godfather. I've only seen it once, but that one time blew me away, in the same way that The Godfather did the first time I saw it, and the only one that has done so since The Godfather. You owe it to yourself DV. I haven't seen any other films by him, though.

Debra what did you think of Seven Samurai? I have been wanting to see it myself, but don't really have access to renting a copy unless my friend gets it from Netflix, and he already got me Disc 1 from Kung Fu: Season 1. Plus after that I've asked him to get me The Beatles First U.S. Visit & The Beatles AnthologyDVD's.

I first saw Seven Samurai and found it to be pretty good, then I moved onto Yojimbo which was excellent so I'm sure if you get hold of it you'll like it too Debra.

I only saw the Western remake of Seven Samurai "The Magnificant Seven," which stars Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, Steve McQueen, and Charles Bronson. It's very enjoyable but only average.

Kurosawa is a master. Not only did he do wonders for Japanese cinema on an international stage (using Ford's westerns as an influence in order to appeal to American audiences), his films are some of the greatest ever made.

Although Seven Samurai (1954) is considered his best by many (and it is indeed fantastic), Rashomon was his first to hit the world market when it won the Palme d'Or in 1951. His acceptance speech said (I'm paraphrasing) he was pleased to have won, but he would have been more pleased to have won by showing something of contemporary Japan.

A year later he did that with Ikiru (1952), a chaarcter study of a small-time bank clerk condemned to death by cancer, and who builds a park for children. It's supposedly one of Spielberg's favourite films.

Throne of Blood (1957) is the best cinematic version you'll see of Shakespeare's Macbeth. Far better than Polanski's, and I hear greater than Welles'. An inspired performance from long-time collaborator Toshiro Mifune, and the atmospheric cinematography is a gem.

It's ironic that Kurosawa should be noted for his 50s' samurai epics, because my personal favourite (and arguably his most pictorial perfect) is Ran (1985), which he made when he was well into his 70s. Filmed on location at Mount Fuji, the sets are awesome; a just rendition of King Lear.

Similar to Ran is Kagemusha (1980), another colourful epic set during the shogun days.

One of his last films, Rhapsody in August (1990) has a performance by Richard Gere; gentle, and passably entertaining, but expectedly not up to his best works.

Thanks for reading,
Mick

i saw Star Wars but didn't really get interested in it until I learned Lucas had cribbed a lot of it from Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress. If ever you try SW ... make a festival of it and see Kurosawa as well ... though the Japanese version has peasants instead of robots (and zero special effects). You need to see it to understand
