Just thought some here (namely Don Vercetti) might be interested to know that The Deer Hunter is going to get a special edition DVD come September

I have only seen this once and liked it somewhat, but I caught about an hour of it on TV about a week or so ago and really enjoyed it more. Looking forward to see it again because it's on the AFI list

GODDAMN it!!!! It says they arent remixing it in 5.1 sound. What the hell is the point of a "Special Edition" if the sound still sucks? If I wanted crappy stereo sound I'd still have my freakin' vcr.

Yes, it has been out on Region Two since August 2003.

My copy is out on loan just now, extras on this version were (according to amazon uk)

° Audio Commentary - 1. Michael Cimino - Director
° Trailer - 1. Original Theatrical Trailer
° Documentaries - 1. REALISING THE DEER HUNTER
° 2. SHOOTING THE DEER HUNTER
° 3. PLAYING THE DEER HUNTER
° Stills Gallery

Doing so would be tampering with the original soundtrack since it was not shot in 5.1. It really is no different than dubbing a movie, cropping a movie to full-screen, or colorizing a black and white movie. Okay, maybe it is a lesser offense than those three examples, but many filmmakers disapprove of this.

Though I'd be perfectly fine with it if they included both Stereo and 5.1.

Great news, BTW. I almost bought the R2.

I'll probably get it, but not 100% sure. I don't remember how many but the amount of "special edition," "extended/unrated editions" or "double dip" DVDs that I'm buying this year is at least between 10-15 with Casino, Man on Fire, Office Space, Don't Be A Menace, Scary Movie 3, Raging Bull, Tommy Boy, Not Another Teen Movie, Dodgeball, Coyote Ugly just to name a few

No problem Aziatic. That site has great news/updates. They usually update at least 2-3 times a day
