Government officials have said that they will rebuild New Orleans. I would like to know how. What is the plan? They are going to spend billions of taxpayers money, but what will we have when it’s rebuilt? Another bowl waiting to fill up with water?
Not even considering the social, logistical and administrative problem, what we know is this: Big, bad hurricanes can hit New Orleans. The levee system didn’t work. The quality and integrity of much of the infrastructure has been compromised to a point where it is rendered useless, irreparable, obsolete or contaminated.
Important questions: What is to prevent a disaster like this from happening again? Should New Orleans be rebuilt like it was?
The government uses eminent domain to build dams, roads and other projects that serve the greater good. Maybe New Orleans should be totally redesigned – without residence – using eminent domain as a reason. It’s a valuable shipping and commerce area. It has historical value – which can be debated. From what we’ve learned, as a residential area it doesn’t have a lot of value.

Although I believe that a community must keep in mind that it has to do what's right to remain prosperous, it must do so for its residents. The theory of eminent domain is that it is to be used only if a case can be made that the project is for the greater good. Who would this new New Orleans be serving? The people of LA? It must serve the PEOPLE of New Orleans. And if there are no residents, what good is that?
Btw, I heard today that the utility down there, Entergy, which also owns our own Indian Point, is considering declaring bankruptcy. They claim to have lost 130,000 customers and face repairs of over $1 billion, with no revenue coming in for a looooong time. That would be a disaster, IMHO.
