I'll post my list later. I think that debatable, considering the amount of American productions an actor like Hopkins was in. Well, My list: Humphery Bogart Charles Chaplin James Stewart Henry Fonda Al Pacino Orson Welles Robert De Niro Lee Marvin The Marx Bros. Gregory Peck

To me, nationality is more important. Otherwise you should consider Monica Bellucci to be an American actress and it would not be something American people should feel particularly proud about! :p Originally posted by Mike Sullivan: Charles Chaplin
actually he was English, but this is absolutely the case you should be more than proud to consider him to be an American actor, since he was a genius.

[/b][/quote]Well, I consider him an American actor because the United States was his home from 1912 til he wasn't allowed back in following the premire of Limelight in 1952. That is still one of the bigest crimes that the United States Government has excecuted over someone. He made his stake here and created a studio. He made his money in the United States and although he might be of British origin, I think it's fair to say that he should fall under the category of American actor. As for the question about the Marx Brothers. Although they are five individuals, they are a single entity thatthrives on the styles of Groucho, Harpo, Chico (and sometimes Zeppo). That's how they get listed under one title.

To even say Hopkins could be debatably American based on your arguments is beyond me.
Mick Hitchcock is a strange charecteer in that he had a prsperous period working in Britan throughout the 1920's and 1930's. he managed to produced that gem, "The 39 Steps", yet the films of his American Period are most decidedly American. Maybe we have a different aefinition of what an American actor is. I look at someone that defines American cinema. You look at were someone happened to be born to determine if they are American.

You look at were someone happened to be born to determine if they are American. I think the place where an actor happens to be born is VERY relevant. For instance, would you say Rodolfo Valentino is an American actor? What charme was left, if he really was a Yankee and not an Italian emigrant? I mean, Chaplin was born in England. And no question what he experienced there, for example, hunger, poverty, deprived childhood in London slums - influenced his artistic genius for ever. Another one is Cary Grant. He's BRITISH to the bone, IMO. He got the quintessential British elegance and sense of humour. And as for actresses, Deborah Kerr. She is the typical reserved, seemingly icy British lady. Now, don't you think that nationality has some meaning, at least to a certain extent?
