Anyone else hate this "holiday"?

I love Halloween! It's the only time I can go outside and brandish my gun in front of unwanted trouble-makers!

I guess that's some sort of fun out of this pointless day.

Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year.

...why? I don't even really consider it a holiday.

Because its fun, and I can.

I love Halloween. I love the whole atmosphere of it. Kids running around dressed up like ghouls and goblins, and it's the only day of the year that parents aren't weirded out when strange old men give their children sweets and goodies. Plus its right in the middle of autumn; red and orange leaves on the trees, nice and cool outside. Man I wish I was a child again...

My favorite holiday is Christmas, it's a holiday because it's the birth of Christ. As a religious stand point halloween has satanic origins. Yes, when I was younger I enjoyed it, but the kids around here are real brats. If you don't give out candy they'll egg your house or even worse. It's bothersome for me to give out candy because I have a temper problem and certain things trigger my temper, Such as the phone ringing or repeated knocks on the door all night long. That is why I hate this holiday. I didn't mean to start any harsh feelings by starting this thread I just wanted to see what your opinions on the holiday were. I'm not looking for an argument here.

Might I suggest getting a big bowl and putting it on your front steps with candy and a note reading please take one, this is all the candy I have if there is no more sorry happy halloween etc.

Well, with that you have the kids who take the whole bowl. So once it runs out that's when the eggs come.

If you didn't want to start an argument, maybe you shouldn't have worded your reply quite the way you did. I COULD question Christmas being YOUR favorite holiday. But its your opinion.

And yes, kids dressing up as Tinkerbell and getting candy is verrryyy Satanic.

As for the bratty kids, tell em to suck on their eggs.

I won't even talk about my views of Christmas, as I don't want to spark a religious debate.

Alright then I'm sorry if the way I worded something bothered you, I didn't intend on it. As for Christmas, Christmas is my favorite holiday for sentimental reasons. Yes there is the presents, but it's one of the few times of the year my family can get together and I see a lot of relatives that I don't really see a whole lot. Also there is the music, food, and movies that give me a good feeling.

Oh yeah, sure. Don't share the teddy bear one.

Here's my Halloween week recap in order of greatness. Other then watching films, this is probably the worst Halloween I've had. I just feel shitty, like I wasted it.

Nosferatu: a Symphony of Horror - (F.W. Murnau;1922;Germany) -
Count Orlok travels from the Carpathian mountains to Germany, bringing a plague with him.
The greatest horror film ever. The best vampire, and although the cast falls short in terms of acting, Max Schreck himself shines as the rat-like Nosferatu. The Silent Orchestra score is wonderful and goes well with the film. The cinematography is ahead of it's time, as well as the direction Murnau accomplishes. A must-see, and before anyone asks, yes it is better then Dracula.

Psycho - (Alfred Hitchcock;1960;USA) -
A woman steals money from her boss and drives away, spending the night at a motel run by a psychopath.
Not Hitchcock's best film but it is still a masterwork of the thriller genre. It has one of the greatest shock moments in cinema and has a great performance from Anthony Perkins. Hitchcock's direction is taut and Bernard Herrmann's score is classic itself.

The Exorcist - (William Friedkin;1973;USA) -
A young girl becomes possessed by a demon while a discouraged priest, and an elderly priest familiar with the demon try to save her.
This film is one of the more disturbing horror films I've seen. At the same time beneath the gore and shock value is a two-way look at the film. As Friedkin says, you can see it as evil existing in a horrible world, or how good can triumph over evil. I believe in the latter, although with the addition that not everything can come to a happy ending. There is evil and good, and both win at times, sometimes at the same time. The film didn't make me question my beliefs like some, but it was still a moving film horror film, which is ridiculously rare. Perhaps a little overrated over the years, but a great film.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - (Tobe Hooper;1974;USA) -
A group of friends fall victim to a family of cannibals.
Again, one of the few horror films that is actually disturbing. It may be low budget, but it's very effective. Right now I think this is better then Halloween as it proves to be more of a "horror" film. Leatherface has proven to be a memorable character, although he inspired several horrible sequels and an equally horrible remake, which lacked all of the punch this film had. The scenes themselves can be pulsating and the film's final image is haunting, and one of the most memorable in horror.

Halloween - (John Carpenter;1978;USA) -
Over a decade after killing his sister, a disturbed man returns to his hometown to go on a killing spree.
A great horror film that has unfortunately plagued cinema with horrible sequels and other films inspired by it. Carpenter's direction makes the film, most notably the genuinely frightening first half, full of stalking. Donald Pleasence also makes the film better with his presence.

Sleepy Hollow - (Tim Burton;1999;USA) -
Icabod Crane is sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of beheadings, supposedly the work of a headless Hessian mercenary.
Burton could've done better with this film, but it still comes out to be a pretty good film mostly due to the atmosphere. Burton creates a wonderful portrayal of Sleepy Hollow. At times it may feel too conventional but Burton's direction and Depp's acting make up for a lot. Christopher Walken as the Headless Horseman is however, the most memorable character in this film. I'd say in fact he's one of the most memorable characters in modern horror. It reminds me of a more barbaric look to his character of Mayor Schreck in Batman Returns.

Psycho - (Gus Van Sant;1998;USA)
A woman steals money from her boss and drives away, spending the night at a motel run by a psychopath. (nearly shot by shot remake)
There's only one thing to enjoy, and that is the opening shot the way Hitchcock wanted going from the air into the window without cuts. That's it, otherwise it's nearly the same thing as the original, only updated. Even Van Sant supposedly hates it from what I've heard. Vaughn is interesting, but not nearly as good as Perkins. The opening shot and the cast are the only good things about it. See the original, and watch Van Sant's other films.

Sounds like we all sort of wasted our Halloweens...maybe we should declare tomorrow the non-Halloween Halloween and celebrate it as we should have celebrated today.

I had a blast. I dressed up as John Belushi seeing as I look a lot like him already. I had a huge beard and long hair which I had to shave to fit the part.

It was really worth it though because I have the same COLLEGE shirt as him and everyone at the party thought I basically was him. I miss my beard and hair, but eh, they'll grow back. I used to always get called John belushi when I used to not have a beard and long hair before so it was the perfect costume. Just had to put on my shirt and pants like his. There might be some pictures I can find from other people, but otherwise I don't have any myself. I should have one by the end of the week perhaps if all goes well. Seeing as I've never posted a pic before, I probably should. But don't hold your breath.

The Doc

I enjoy seeing all the cute little toddlers in their cute little costumes. It's so gratifying to see the look on the faces of these young children when you hand them candy and tell them how great or how cool they look in their costumes!
The little boys dressed up as superheroes really thinking that they are Spider-man or The Hulk. And the pretty little girls dressed up as Snow White or as a princess, walking like they really are royalty! But the best is when one of these little ones are dressed up as a monster or a witch, and when they walk up to you and you make like you're really afraid. They get such a kick out of thinking that they are scaring an adult.

Children are priceless.
