Q: Coppola and George Lucas had founded 'American Zoetrope' in the late 1960's to make independent films outside of studios. Why did Coppola make The Godfather for a big studio anyway? [/b]According to The Godfather Legacy, it says: "...it represented a step backward to Coppola, a return to a typical Hollywood project under tight studio control. Nevertheless, given his worrisome financial position, Coppola had agreed to condider the project and started to read the book."
"The Godfather was a man to whom everybody came for help and never were they disappointed. He made no empty promises, nor the craven excuse that his hands were tied by more powerful forces in the world than himself. It was not necessary that he be your friend, it was not even important that you had no means with which to repay him. Only one thing was required. That you, yourself, proclaim your friendship. And then, no matter how poor or powerless the supplicant, the Godfather would take that person's troubles to his heart. He would let nothing stand in the way to a solution of that person's woe. His reward? Friendship, the respectful title 'Don' and sometimes the more affectionate salutation of 'Godfather.' Perhaps, to show respect only, never for profit, some humble gift - a gallon or homemade wine or a basket of fresh baked goods on a holiday. It was understood to proclaim that you were in his debt and that he had the right to call upon you at any time to redeem the debt by some small service." -- Mario Puzo, The Godfather (1969).

Grazie, Perdy! Q: Which crucial scene in GFI did Coppola admit he "misread" and therefore shot outside of Puzo's original vision?

The undertaker is talking behind (rather than directly in his ear) Don Vito in a directors attempt to increase the apparent size of the Godfather and thus increase his character/screen presence at the same time.
"Can't you give me a straight answer anymore?"

Actually, Don Sonny, Pacino was to play the part of Mario Trantino in "The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight" after "The Panic in Needle Park." Originally, FFC wanted him (of course) to play Michael but the pezzonovantes at Paramount wanted nothing to do with him and wanted James Caan to play Michael. But after seeing the dailies of "Needle Park," the execs agreed to let FFC cast Pacino as Michael if he could also get Caan to play Sonny. The only problem was Pacino was signed on to do "Gang". So Paramount got Pacino out of his obligation to star in "Gang" and brought him over to play Michael, which allowed FFC to recast the part of Paulie and freed up (ironically) Deniro to play Mario in "Gang" only to return as a young Vito in GF2.
I'm confused - what was the question?

A: My intended answer was the Khartom head. FFC read it to be in the bed; while Puzo wrote it to be along the bed showing a silouette. Q: Although GFIII started with the scenes of Reno and New York before the Papal Ceremony; what was the alternate opening shot in GFIII?

don freddy A: It was an overexposure of Mama Corleone. Q: Same scene. How did Sal signal to Barzini that the hit on Michael was set?

To Don Vanchenzo your wrong the face on Michael Corleones jacket was Kays look again. By the way Sal signaled to Barzini by a nod and a hand shake with a little whisper.
Q: How many people were killed in the first godfather movie?

A) They told him it was a makeup test. He showed up resembling the version of Vito Corleone we all know and love and it was obvious the role was made for him. Q) I think Brando ultimately became the owner, but where did the lap-cat come from at the beginning of GF1 and what problems arose from the cat being in the scene? Nick Edit: Forgot to mention the "who" part of the question... It was FFC's idea to tell Brando it was a makeup test because he couldn't bring himself to tell Marlon Brando that he had to do a screen test. He didn't like seeing the once-mighty Brando so desperate for a role.

the correct answer to my question earlier which was how many people were killed in the godfather is 18. Luca, Sollozo, McClusky, Phillip Tattaligia (we never see), Paulie, Appolonia, Moe Green, Stratchi, Guy with Stratchi in elevator, Cuono, Barzini, two guys with Barzini, Tattaligia, and his mistress, Carlo, Tessio, Santino. Let me know if I missed anyone.
Q: What is Al Neri's first line in the movies, hint he doesn't speak in the first one at all.
