What did you think of this movie. I thought it was very good. Did you find Hanks and Newman convincing as Irish mobsters from Cleveland? Jude Law and a hitman? Stanley Tucci as Nitti?

I loved this movie. Loved it. Best mob movie since the Godfathers. Yes, even Goodfellas and Casino.
The movie was shot beautifully and the scenes are very memorable. The Rain Scene, oh my God, brilliant movie.

I agree, J.J. I wasn't surprised to hear that this flick is the top one in DVD rentals and sales this month. Brilliant cinematography and acting. I was in Blockbuster just today and every one of them was out...BTW: If you haven't seen Knockaround Guys yet, save your money for something more worthy!

I watched it last night and to be honest I wasn't impressed.

It seemed predictable and boring (in my opinion) Everything seemed too easy for Sullivan, robbing the banks without any hassle or comeback and the revenge killings too simple.

Maybe the fact that I was conciously / subconciously comparing it to far greater gangster films like The Godfather or Goodfellas meant that it never really had a chance.

Mick, I'm with you on this one in that I found it a bit 'slow and plodding' for the first hour. The ending was a foregone conclusion too.
That said, I love Tom Hanks and Paul Newman who both 'saved' the film for me with their great acting.
Oh well, you cant win em all

I'm with Mick and FH. Good but not great. Beautifully filmed, but slow overall. Hanks and Newman didn't get (or give) much emotional range.

A great movie, that I like more when I think about after it's finished. BUt the fact that it is based around one plot sacrifices the possible wittiness and humour of Goodfellas and Casino. Hanks is great, as always, but it wasn't, for me, as good as it could have been.

I'm with Turnbull. Very well filmed.

And you liar, teller of tall tales: you trample all the Lord's commandments underfoot, you murder, steal, commit adultery, and afterward break into tears, beat your breast, take down your guitar and turn sin into a song. Shrewd devil, you know very well that God pardons singers no matter what they do, because he can simply die for a song.

Ok, so I'm a little late with my post, but I really liked this film. Hanks and Newman gave awesome performances.
No, it's no GF; I don't think it was trying to be. I think that ANY "mob" film that's released will always be compared to GF. But we know that GF is the gold standard of mob films.
Anyway, I love RTP---watch the DVD all the time--and hope Tom keeps cranking them out.

Great movie. Story, acting, scenery, was awesome. Tom Hanks and Paul Newman are some of the best actors and Jude Law gives a memorable performance.

Where did you get the idea that they were from Cleveland? The book states that they lived in the Quad Cities in Iowa.

Newman is more convincing as a mobster. Hanks' face was too good to be a mobster. maybe because of his past roles in his movies. Jude Law was very effective in his role . . .

I don't know about the book, but the movie took place in Rock Island, Illinois and yea I thought Hanks was convincing as a hitman...he all but disappeared in my opinion...I only saw Mike Sullivan, which is more than I expected. I knew it was gonna be tough for him to convince me but he pulled it off.

And I loved that soft Irish brogue that Newman spoke...

"You're protecting him already?"
"We're protecting our interest, Mike."

I thought it was a very good movie, and as with many others, I was quite suprised at how good and convincingly Hanks played a hitman.

this is definatly and underrated movie. it is possible the best mobster movie since the godfather. i would say only the godfather trilogy and goodfellas are better. and gf3 and goodfellas aren't that much better. anyways it was so good it even moved my older sister to tears when she watched it. i forced my friend andre to watch it, and he hates these dramatic movies, and he left with a tear in his eye. the first day it came out on video he was there buying it. it's that good.

RTP was a good movie. BUT,the story line was very simple and easy to follow, which is not necisarily a bad thing, but I am used to the Godfather films and Goodfellas, where most things arent what they seem to be at first. But it was worth watching.

You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

I thought it was very well done. I enjoyed Hank's character, as well as Newman's. Compared to the Godfather, no, it does not measure up. But what film ever could?! It was a very good film....
