I don't know if I'd call Casino great, but it's definitely a good movie and a gangster movie essential.
Here's a little trivia: Casino holds the record for the most F words said in a movie, beating out Scarface and Pulp Fiction.

Here's a little trivia: Casino holds the record for the most F words said in a movie, beating out Scarface and Pulp Fiction. and Goodfellas, which Casino shows (too) much resemblance to. Maybe that's why it isn't as classic as Goodfellas. that and the fact it is too long. GOODFELLAS & CASINO: Scorsese directing, three leading actors including Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci, based on a book by Nicholas Pilleggi, written by Pilleggi and Scorsese themselves, story based on real (mob) events, Pesci's character is a hothead, there's a girl with special meaning to one of the principal characters, it's about the rise in the mob, Frank Vincent is a supporting character, Scorsese's mother has a small part, it uses music from the time it is set in. Casino also reunites DeNiro and James Woods (after Once Upon A Time In America). Sharon Stone is the femme fatale (winning many awards for her role). Watch it, it's a mob-movie-must-see!

Excellent acting, sizzling script, awe-inspiring direction and a cracking soundtrack make this (IMO) one of the best gangster movies of all time. A great insight into how the Mafia once ruled Vegas. It's frightening, intriguing, overlong, funny, and as violent as a movie can get. On first watch, I liked it better than Goodfellas. On all wacthes thereafter I think Goodfellas is a much superior film. I'd give it four out of four. Mick

That's right, Tony. No real comparison between Casino and Goodfellas. Don't look for the mordant humor and bang-bang action of Goodfellas. Instead, in Casino you get a long, thoughtful, detailed view of the Mafia and Vegas. You also get DeNiro's best performance since Goodfellas and a memorable performance by Sharon Stone. Plus, Scorsese's casting genius is evident with his use of Don Rickles, Tommy Smothers, and the Sultan of Smarm, James Woods. Excellent film!

I don't think it's as great as Goodfellas, but it's pretty damned good, and if you liked Goodfellas you're sure to like Casino.

Originally posted by Chilltown: It's a good movie, but it covers, literally, no new ground whatsoever. It did not have critic support, Lenoard Maltin hated it for example, and it was perceived to just be a rip off. i like it for what it is, but it is too long, and it took much of the heat that Goodfellas and GFIII brought on- overexposure of the genre. Both of the other movies have also become historic as time goes by, but Casino has not. Scorcese went to the well once too often. I resaw Casino, and altough it's still a movie I enjoy very much (especially the first 45 minutes), I think Chilltown says it best. What were they thinking, back in 1994/1995? Scorse, DeNiro, Pesci I mean... it's not as if it was anything revolutionary, they might as well have called it Goodfellas 2.
