Hi there,

A couple times in the movie, the term "Pezza-novanta" is mentioned. Anybody know what it means? If I remember correctly, Michael says something like, "another Pazza novanta" when he is talking to the Don in the backyard, when the Don is advising him.

Anyone?

Thanks,
ML

In the book, Vito Corleone refers to Jack Woltz as one. I'm not sure, but I think it means someone who is willing to live up to his bluffing. A man with "balls", if you will.

Pezzonovanta means "big shot".

The word is pezzonovante. In the novel it means 90 caliber like a firearm. It's colloquial Sicilian. Pezzo means a piece of something. Novante is a form of the Italian for 90. Again, it's coloquial Sicilian, so it doesn't necessarily make sense when you translate it word for word into English. Actually, Mike says that he is not a pezzonovante.

Mike says "another pezzonovante."

In colloquial Italian you can say "pezzo da novanta" for someone powerful. Maybe you could happen to need a "pezzo da novanta" to help you get a job or something like that.

Lavina-Dont think that I doubt you, but where are you from in Italia? The reason I ask is becuase Ive heard that Sicilian dialect is diffrent from Neopolitan is diffrent from Northern Italian etc.
