Are you talking about the montage of several different newspaper aricles portraying several different mob deaths? The scene just before Vito arrivs from the hospital? If so, then this scene is just to show you that the war is going on. The deaths portray a bunch of differnt killings that happened during the war.
*note-all of the pictures shown in the montage were actual photos of mob deaths*
"I never wanted this for you. I work my whole life--I don't apologize--to take care of my family, and I refused to be a fool, dancing on the string held by all those bigshots. I don't apologize--that's my life--but I thought that, that when it was your time, that you would be the one to hold the string. Senator Corleone; Governor Corleone." -Don Vito Corleone to his son, Michael

That smiling guy is a detective who's having a photo-op and a laugh with his colleagues about mobsters killing each other.
Look how they massacred my boy...

does anyone know the title of the song that plays during that montage, the piano piece played by Carmine Coppola? I'm pretty sure it's one of the following...
"The Bells Of St. Mary's" A.E. Adams, Douglas Furber
"All Of My Life" Written by Irving Berlin
"Mona Lisa" Lyrics by Jay Livingston Composed by Ray Evans
"Non so più" (Cherubino's Aria) from opera "Le nozze di Figaro" Act I, Scene V by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
"Manhattan Serenade" Written by Louis Alter Performed by Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra
... again in case its not clear, the piano piece being played by the old man during the montage following the Sollozzo killing, where Willie Cicci leans over the piano and watches. It'd be great if someone would let me know. thanks
