I've read Italian comments on this story, and the general public sentiment here is that the government are the real extortionists here. I have to agree with that sentiment. Say you seize all of their assets and break them down to poverty level, guess what they're going to turn to in order to come back up? More crime and violence. I think if they ever actually break the Mafia financially it's going to go back to the really violent days over there, however I think these assets ultimately end up back in the mob's hands through different strawmen and the beat goes on. In the next ten years, all Mafia and organized crime syndicates are going to get more powerful. As governments around the world become insolvent, they will become more and more oppressive, feeding the demand for black market goods. I suspect we'll go back to the old days of black market salami, flour, rice, and gasoline.
