Even if you earn a decent living, it's still negligible compared to what a lot of criminals make. Add to this the fact that you're on the clock for most of your day. You have to take shit almost daily, either from bosses, co-workers, customers... You're being put under quite a lot of pressure with daily and monthly targets and whatnot. All this for getting paid just enough to make ends meet, do some well-considered pastime activity and save a bit for the future. And at the end of the day - save for the absolute minority that's getting rich and famous with a straight job - you're still a complete nobody, even if you're valued at your job. Nobody knows your name and nobody will remember you when you die.

There's a major lure in getting into (organized) crime. You earn a lot of money, your name commands a certain amount of awe, you have considerable freedom...etc...these are all things a straight job in 95% of the time won't give you...or at least not to that extent. That's why there'll always be people getting into crime.

Keeping your life on the right track is not easy and in many ways it goes against your desires and wants...and it's all the more respectful for it.

oh absolutely it’s very hard especially if you have kids. That’s why the mob was so successful because they could attract a lot of people who would excel in that life with the allure of riches. Some were smarter than others and done were tougher than others but they got a good mix of box. But like you said it takes a real man to have a straight life and not get sucked up in that temptation
