Mac Macaluso was not shelved. He was asked to step down from the hierarchy and he acquiesced. Mariano Macaluso was already an old man and didn't care. He was also a non-combatant type guy, very very wealthy, and didn't need the headache of dealing with Amuso and Casso who were Brooklyn guys. Mac was a Harlem guy all his life.

So it was not a 'shelving' but rather a retiring of sorts. He was still highly respected as a veteran soldier
