Sicily ranks second in Italy in the ranking of organizations dissolved for mafia infiltration and managed by extraordinary commissions. According to data from the Interior Ministry for 2020, the sad record belongs to Calabria.
There were 54 extraordinary commissions that, in 2020, administered dissolved entities for mafia-type infiltration and conditioning. Specifically, these are 52 municipalities, with a total population of 704,728 inhabitants, and 2 provincial health authorities (ASP of Reggio Calabria and Catanzaro). This number includes both the commissioner managements started in 2020 and those connected to previous dissolution as well as the extended managements.
This is what is contained in the report of the Minister of the Interior on the activity carried out by the Extraordinary Commissions, presented to Parliament.
Almost all of the local authorities are concentrated in the 4 Regions of historical settlement of organized crime : Calabria (21), Sicily (14) , Puglia (8) and Campania (7). The remaining two municipalities are located in Basilicata (1) and Valle D'Aosta (1).
The dissolution of the municipal council of Saint Pierre, ordered in 2020, confirms the growth of the trend, recorded in recent years, in the municipalities of Northern Italy which, now, have risen to a total of nine. Here, the presence of organized crime is growing attracted by the possibility of expanding its business volume, exploiting, thanks to the penetration of the legal economy, the most advantageous economic conditions, especially in the sector of public procurement and urban planning.
