Mafia Geography in the United States

Hundreds of other affiliated people must be added to these numbers. Each member, in fact, has the possibility to affiliate between 5 and 10 people.
In all, therefore, there are between 3400 and 6800 affiliated to "La Cosa Nostra" only in the state of New York.

In Buffalo there is the Todaro family, whose head is Joseph Todaro Jr. and the sub-chief is Domenico Violi. According to what was learned by the AGI, the "family" controls the business of Niagara Falls and Hamilton in Ontario.

In Philadelphia there is the Merlino family, with at least thirty members and constantly growing. Here, the recent release of the boss Joseph Merlino is increasing the mafia caliber of the family in the so-called "Tri State Area" (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut) and has a strong relationship with the Genovese.

Another important area for the Cosa Nostra is that in Elizabeth, the county seat of Union County in New Jersey. Here we find the “strong family” of the De Cavalcante, with a hundred affiliates and an important contiguity with the Gambinos.

In Boston is the Patriarca family that controls drugs, gambling, usury and illegal labor racketeering.

In Los Angeles we find some members of the Gambino family.

Finally, Miami: here the situation is very varied, a sort of "open city" with all the aforementioned families present and a "new entry", the Caruana-Cuntrera, historic mafia family from Agrigento (known as the Rothschilds of the mafia or the bankers di Cosa Nostra) which has tentacles in the Miami economy, in absolute connection with the other "families".

The Camorra does not have an autonomous structure in the US, but has historical ties with the Genovese family, some Italian affiliates have properties in Florida (particularly nightclubs).

It makes sense that the Genovese Family has Camorra ties, Vito Genovese was Neapolitan himself. They've also been said to work with the Ndrangheta, and were mentioned in the Gigliotti case.

Lol the Colombos only have a presence in Brooklyn. It's funny they started out as a Brooklyn gang and they're still a Brooklyn-based family today.

It'll be interesting to see if the NY families really make a push to get closely aligned with the Sicilian mafia going forward. Two of the families still have Zip factions. But I'm curious to see what the other families do.

They should all get closer to their roots, people who are steeped in Tradition.

I think that's the next avenue for the US families. If they align themselves closer, beyond whatever their current status is with them, it'll help.

DeCavalcante's are also a Sicilian family, Detroit and Chicago also have ties to Sicily.

Hollander, where did you read that Chicago has ties to Sicily?

There was an Italian crime report from 2009 that stated that the Chicago Outfit imported the most zips of any family outside of Italy.

The confidential source mentioned in that article was a snippet of a presentation from the FBI NY office, which was taken out of context (it was about NY influences not LCN overall) and is by far not comprehensive. The journalist - whom I know - does not know anything about this topic, his source is rather incomplete.

The DeCavs being described as a “strong” family is also quite inaccurate.

What do you mean by “NY influences”?

The single families membership numbers don’t seem that off tho.
These are obvious estimates sure, but, again, plausible. No?

If they were very specific about the crime families they were talking about, then tell me how it was about NY influences and not LCN overall? It seems pretty cut and dry to me, so how was it taken out of context? You're just trying to muddy the waters here.

If Iaw enforcement says that the DeCavalcante Family has plenty of Zips and are strong, I'd take their word for it over yours. I'm just saying, if I had to decide between the two, it wouldn't be you. No offense.

We don’t have access to the documents in question to clarify if it’s truly what it was stated or the author’s unfamiliarity with the subject (and perhaps even the language barrier) made him write something not fully accurate.

The DeCavs have been described as a low-tier group in the northeast for quite a while. So it does strike me as odd to see them being referred to as “strong”.

As for the estimates for each family, I do think those numbers are believable.

They are strong as far as numbers and influence goes in Union and Essex. You should read Giovanni's Ring. It goes into the more modern day state of the family. I'm amazed at how little people know about this subject here.

I've even heard some morons on this very forum wonder if they're still recruiting guys.

I read about Gatto’s run with them. I’ll check his book out. Thanks for the suggestion.

Anyone else wonders why they didn’t include/mention Chicago?

As said above this is a map by FBI NY field office, and contains mistakes/misinterpretations because the guy doesn't quite know the topic...and it is a perspective from FBI NY for outsiders to look at what NY sees of the rest of the USA.

Yeah but from everything I've read about the current going-ons with LCN the numbers add up, and from the look of things many people here agree. There's always one somewhere. There's always that one guy trying to refute everything.

Based on the source material then, what makes this map inaccurate, specifically?
What did the author get wrong?
