Castellano was angry over him selling and possibly using drugs, plus killing people in unsanctioned hits. Castellano also wanted Gotti crew member Angelo Ruggerio dead for drugs, the Dellacroce tape recording with John Gotti clearly show that. Gotti would not give up his friend, and Dellacroce says in frustration that if the tapes are not turned over "We roll it up and go to war" So both Gotti (Or his crew member) and Ray were going to be killed. I think Castellano was a couple of decades too late, things had changed, and he had gotten out of touch with what was going on in the streets.

So the hit on Castellano was a life or death situation for Gotti and the rest of the guys who were going to be whacked on orders from Paul.

Paul could have used the Cherry Hill Gambino's too.

How close was he with them? They were related, but never read anything about his relationship with them besides taking "drug money"...from the Cherry Hills.

Did the Cherry Hill Gambino's have any violent killers who could have curbed John Gotti's intentions of killing Paul.

I know John Gotti left the Cherry Hill Gambino's alone when he became boss... (possibly be because he was afraid of them??)

Paul could have also went to another family for help (but this would have made him look weak)
