a question concerning john monteleone.
when did his elevation to south side street boss ( not sure of title ) occur in 1993? all good info has monteleone reaching this position in 1993 because of continued imprisonment and indictments of both carlisi and difronzo and to some extant james marcello. i have read that he was promoted to acting boss as well making him both south side street boss and functioning as overall outfit acting boss. with this role monteleone had overall control of remnants of old infelise/delaurentis cicero crew, with the spano street crew being most active and perhaps tasked with collection of melrose park crew money still owing on the street monteleone would also then historically have control over 26th street then being led by james la pietra, brother to angelo. la pietra was capo of crew, with 2-3 street crews working for him; calabrese sr. crew, james diforti/LIUNA crew ( including caruso family ) and one led by joseph lamantia. la pietra died of cancer sept. 9 1993 and it is alleged at this time monteleone became capo of that dominant crew. so is it only after james lapietras death that monteleone took over as capo of 26th or with lapietra sick with cancer were are these promotions done at once. a guess on timeline would be sometime after conviction of john difronzo in march 1993 on charges related to rincon casino, charges difronzo appealed and as we know won.
a quick layout...
circa april 1993
south side= encompassing both 26th street and cicero crews. similar set up to when torello, lapietra and ferriola were south side street boss. street boss+capo of 26th street crew john monteleone
26th street crew capo james lapietra- sick and dying of cancer, semi retired?
street crew leaders 1. frank calabrese sr. 2. james diforti 3. joseph lamantia
and
cicero crew spano street crew leader michael spano sr.
#2 james inendino?
i also came across some info on james diforti getting 'made' /promoted sometime in early 1994. could this be related to monteleones promotion also? did diforti take over as #2 in 26th street?
Jimmy LaPietra died in 1993 and was succeeded by Monteleone who in turn was later succeeded by Toots Caruso as capo for the Chinatown/South Side crew. Rocky Infelise was imprisoned in 1993 and was allegedly succeeded by Spano Sr. When Spano went to jail the Cicero crew lost its power for a moment, mainly because Spano shouldve taken one of the top spots, but still they were able to relay on their "cousins" or close allies from the leading Chinatown crew under Monteleone and Caruso. According to one informant, before going to jail, Spano allegedly told him that Monteleone was Spano's "boss" and also leader of the whole Outfit. In fact, if you look at Monteleones criminal history, he was more of a "Cicero" guy rather than Chinatown. Caruso remained as capo for Chinatown, while Sarno and Cataudella continued to control the Cicero group and continued fightin for the top spot. So, thats why after Monteleones death, the old Aiuppa/Melrose-Cicero crew under Tornabene, Chiaramonti and the imprioned guys like Zizzo and Marcello saw a chance to take over the top spot. Sources say that Tornabene allegedly became acting boss and his job was allegedly to keep the top spot until Marcellos release from prison. I also think that Tornabene also gave the ok for Chiaramontis murder contract, mainly because Chiaramonti tried to bring back some of the former interests around the south and Cicero that previously belonged to his crew, but now were under Cicero/Chinatown. After the releases and second imprisonments of Marcello, Lombardo and the rest of the fellas, and also after Zizzos murder, or after the "death" of the former Aiuppa crew....Sarno, Cataudella, Caruso and later Inendino and DeLaurentis, had the chance to take some of the top spots, again, obviously together with the "everlasting" EP/Grand group.

Who do we have in the Outfit guys aged 90 and over, even if they are associates? Most of the old guys that we know of are over 80 years old, and "once a made guy, always a made guy", but still I think we should look at "younger" fellas such as Gagliano.

Rackets these guys are more than likely involved in that are money makers? Im sure there are some businesses in around Elmwood Park for example that are paying a street tax to operate considering its always been that way for them for years? The so-called street tax was allegedly cancelled by DiFronzo some time during the 90s. I dont know if the Cicero/Chinatown brought it back but I doubt it.
