The closest thing to some sort of indigenous Sardinian OC was perhaps the “Anonima Sarda” or “Anonima Sequestri”, a very loosely organized network of former farmers specialized in high-profile kidnappings.

Sardinia was one of Italy’s poorest and least developed region. There weren’t many of them and, on top of that, they had massive immigration towards Northern Europe and overseas (Argentina, Canada). Whatever form of crime they had was basically rural mischief, like cattle rustling. They had/have some sort of honor system that made vendettas last for generations. It’s a fascinating sociological reality similar to what exists in the Balkans.

In the 1970s mainland investors and OC groups turned it into a major tourist hub. Since then the whole region is mostly focused on hospitality, real estate and tourism-based services. That makes it a perfect money laundering spot.

Whatever OC presence they have now is from criminal groups from mainland Italy.
