Thats a real good point they rat so often that its not even a news story.

I would be interested to see Furio's lists of rats for different types of organizations; he's very good at collecting those.

From there, it would be easy to look at the number of rats, compare it to an estimate of what we think a total membership number would be for each specific group and break it down in percentages. Mafia may have more rats than Mexican Mafia for instance, but it also has a couple of thousand more official, documented members so when it goes down to percentages, it could actually be that MM members are flipping more than LCN members.

Another thing also is do you consider a rat someone who officially took the stand? Someone who snitches on his rivals in the streets to get ahead? Or someone who's working with the government to gain more influence and power. Because personally, if you're looking at someone who snitches on their rivals in the streets I would say the percentage of grown-up Mafia members who have been in the life for a while is actually higher than a bunch of teenagers strung out on dope claiming gangs. But hey, that's just my two cents!

But out of those 10k members in MS13, like 80% of them are teenagers and (very) young adults. Kids involved in petty crimes who wouldn't have anything to offer to cops even if they asked.

And you're absolutely right (as is Liggio and other posters) - there are tons of informants all around but in LA, Chicago and places like that where gangs operate, no one gives a shit about a small time informant who ratted out his friend Pookie for robbing a liquor store.

For me a rat is a person that for save his life or to avoid prison decide to break the omertà and give infos on his fellows to the LE. If I rember Genovese was framed by a latin drug courier,anyway isnt flipping if you doesnt speak directly with the LE.
