The murder of Brancaccio, the confession: "I saw him and I shot him, he didn't want me to be with his daughter" The story of Alessandro Sammarco, 19, who is now in custody for the killing of Natale Caravello: "I was afraid of his reaction and for this I had the gun with me. I met him by chance and I opened the fire, I did a big trouble. " But some doubts remain about the dynamics. Sammarco, related to the mafia and who is defended by the lawyer Corrado Sinatra, was thus constituted yesterday evening shortly after the crime. Given the precedents of Caravello, last night the hypothesis of a crime matured for other reasons was not completely ruled out, but as is now happening more and more often in Palermo, behind the latest murders there are passionate or really futile reasons. Sammarco, who has already had to deal with justice as a minor, but for very minor crimes, such as driving without a license, helps his grandfather in running a shop in Ballarò.

Mafia arrests in Belmonte, the investigation started by the repentant former boss Bisconti by Marco Volpe - 07 April 2022
In the investigations that led to the round-up with 9 arrests this morning (April 7) that redesign the mafia balance in Belmonte Mezzagno and tell the rise of Agostino Giocondo , an important role was played by a collaborator of justice, Filippo Salvatore Bisconti.
Bisconti, former head of the family of Belmonte Mezzagno, was a prominent element, so much so that he was part of the New Provincial Commission of the Palermo mafia. The repentant began his statements right after his arrest in the 2018 Cupola 2.0 operation.
Bisconti, an offender and son of the boss Ludovico, known as "il commendatore", has always been involved in the building construction sector and organically integrated into the Mafia context of Belmonte, despite having lived in Palermo for several years. He was arrested for the first time for the mafia on May 30, 1996, convicted, released from prison in September 2006 and subjected to special surveillance with the obligation to stay in Palermo. He returns to his cell two years later, in December 2008, involved together with 98 other people in the Perseus operation but from the process that ensued he came out clean.
New arrest in March 2015 in the Jafar operation with six other people and accused of mafia association and extortion. Finally, the involvement was in December 2018, in the Cupola 2.0 operation together with 49 other people, because he was held responsible for having been part of the new provincial commission of Cosa Nostra, precisely as head of the Belmonte Mezzagno / Misilmeri clan. The investigations carried out in that procedure showed that the top exponents of the districts of Palermo and its province, after the death of Totò Riina , had rebuilt the dome, the "governing body" of the Palermo mafia that coordinated the choices of common interest of the various territories
Filippo Bisconti, therefore, as head of the Misilmeri / Belmonte Mezzagno district, had been one of the members by right of the commission, sitting next to men of honor of the caliber of Gregorio Di Giovanni, of the Porta Nuova district; Settimo Mineo, from the district of Pagliarelli; Leandro Greco, of Ciaculli; Calogero Lo Piccolo, by Tommaso Natale / San Lorenzo; Francesco Colletti, from Villabate / Bagheria.
After the arrest Visconti decided to collaborate with the justice system. His statements were immediately considered particularly relevant, demonstrating a deep knowledge of the Palermo mafia territory and contributing to the capture of other members of the mafia.
In the reasons for the sentence of December 3, 2020 in the context of the Cupola 2.0 trial, the judge writes: "It should be noted that the judgment on the credibility of Bisconti and on the overall reliability of his statements is certainly positive, because all the indices have been fully verified. of reliability required and above all the extrinsic evidence acquired consisting of the results of a massive amount of wiretapping and targeted monitoring services are many ".
A very "respectful" story that of Bisconti, it is he himself who tells his own criminal story, illustrating the path and describing a series of facts, starting from his entry into the Cosa Nostra, in the family of Belmonte Mezzagno, between 1997 and 1998, through a "ritual combination" curated by the men of honor Benedetto Spera, Giuseppe Spera and Nicola La Barbera. He told the investigators that he became the head of the Belmonte family in the last period of the management by Vasta and Ravesi, in 2014. And it was the repentant himself, during an interrogation, who explained that in the Misilmeri district? Belmonte Mezzagno the mafia, although still tied to rather archaic values, had by now assumed a fluid structure and no longer subject to rigid hierarchical schemes, also due to the numerous arrests.

Italian anti-mafia photographer Battaglia dies aged 87 Issued on: 14/04/2022 - 10:54 Modified: 14/04/2022 - 10:53
Prize-winning photographer Battaglia blew away the romanticised and sanitised image of Cosa Nostra
Rome (AFP) – Italian photographer Letizia Battaglia, whose shots of bullet-riddled bodies captured the dark world of the Sicilian Mafia, has died aged 87.
Prize-winning Battaglia, who would speed to the scene of murders in the 1980s on her Vespa to bear witness to the violence, blew away the romanticised and sanitised image of Cosa Nostra.
Palermo mayor Leoluca Orlando said her death late Wednesday had deprived his city, the Sicilian capital, of "an extraordinary woman" who played "an emblematic part in the process of freeing Palermo from the Mafia's control".
Battaglia, an anti-Mafia campaigner who became a local politician in Palermo and then a regional Sicilian assembly member, started out in the photo department of a local daily newspaper.
"You could have five murders in the same day," she said in 2006, when a collection of her photographs of organised crime slayings went on show in a Rome exhibition.
"The work was exhausting but you couldn't stand by with your arms folded, with our little Mafia on our little island.
'Bear witness' "We had to bear witness to this violence and the world had to know."
Culture Minister Dario Franceschini mourned Thursday, "A great photographer, a great Italian woman who, with her art and her photographs, engaged in important struggles of denunciation and civil commitment."
Photographer Letizia Battaglia would speed to the scene of Mafia murders in the 1980s on her Vespa to bear witness to the violence
Battaglia's pictures show a small street in Palermo, the interior of an apartment, the white wall of a pork butcher's shop, a garage ramp, the back of a bus, a car seat.
They all have one thing in common: captured in black and white a body lying on the ground near a pool of blood, or a face torn apart by a bullet.
It was the era when the Corleone clan, headed by boss Toto Riina and Bernardo Provenzano, finally caught last month after decades on the run, fought their way to power.
So-called "men of honour" (Mafia members), judges regarded as too interfering, local politicians, young drug dealers -- the "Palermo war" left hundreds dead in the space of a few years, often gunned down in broad daylight and in public places.
Battaglia's pictures are unsparing. Faces of the dead are shown with eyes wide open, surprised by death. Friends and relatives lament, while onlookers crowd round the scene with expressions of curiosity or resignation.
In 2006, she said those bloody times may be gone, but the Mafia is not. The Rome exhibition, she said, was "a cry for help, because the consequences for our island of the Mafia are as unbearable as ever".

Mafia, assets of 100 million euros confiscated from an entrepreneur
(ANSA) - PALERMO, 11 APR - Assets amounting to 100 million euros were confiscated by the Anti-Mafia Investigative Directorate (Dia) from an entrepreneur, originally from Monreale (Palermo) but with various economic interests in the province of Trapani.
Seals to apartments, land, bank accounts and companies including a tourist hotel complex in southwestern Sicily, "where Mafia bosses of the caliber of the district chief of Mazara delVallo appear to have been hosted", say the investigators.
The provision came after the first section of the Court of Cassation issued "the rejection sentence advanced by the entrepreneur and put an end to the prevention procedure started by Dia in 2014".
The entrepreneur, "according to recurrent declarations of collaborators of justice, was the bearer of interests of the Sicilian mafia groups through artificial fraudulent mechanisms through which he had access to conspicuous national and community public funding by involving individuals close to a known mafia fugitive in his projects", say the magistrates.
Among the confiscated assets also some companies based in San Marino and London, involved in complex financial transactions connected to large international commercial transactions.

Is the Cuntrera Caruana alliance still around? Those dudes were huge drug dealers In the September 2017 recorded conversation, Dom Violi says the Musitanos were supporting the Cuntreras, who at times are referred to as the “coffee guys.” The Cuntrera-Caruana Mafia family is known in the Woodbridge and Toronto areas. The home of Giuseppe Cuntrera, referred to in the court documents as “Big Joe,” was targeted with gunshots and fire in the summer of 2017. In another conversation Joe Violi talks about a plan he’d heard about from a hit man to target two people, one in Hamilton and one in Toronto. Violi tells the police agent he thought the Musitanos and the Cuntreras were behind those plans. But it appears those murders, if there was ever any truth to the plans, never happened.

Police arrest 31 in big Mafia operation Extortion, drug dealing used to generate cash for jailed mafiosi
(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 17 - Carabinieri and State police arrested 31 people early on Tuesday in a big operation targetting Cosa Nostra. The suspects are accused of crimes ranging from mafia association to drugs felonies, the illegal possession of weapons and extortion. The police took 29 suspects to jail while two were put under house arrest. The operation took place in Palermo and there were also arrests outside Sicily, in Reggio Calabria, Alessandria and Genoa. The investigation that led to the arrests revealed the structure of the Ciaculli and Brancaccio crime families within Cosa Nostra. Investigators believe that part of the money raised by their criminal activities went to the families of jailed mobsters. The probe uncovered 50 cases of extortion of retailers, with the victims ranging from illegal street hawkers to the owners of big stores. In one case, a seller of Palermo's traditional 'sfincione' focaccia bread had to contact one of the suspects after finding the locks on their premises glued up. Palermo Mayor Leoluca Orlando said the operation showed the authorities must keep up their guard because "Cosa Nostra no longer rules the city, but it has not been defeated". (ANSA).

Mafia: infiltrations in two Messina municipalities, mayor and deputy arrested
The Financiers of the Provincial Command of Messina have carried out a precautionary custody order against 7 subjects, under investigation for mafia association and various episodes of crimes against the Public Administration. The investigations focused on the conditioning of the municipal administrations of the Municipalities of Moio Alcantara and Malvagna, centers of the Ionian belt of the Peloritana province, by the Sicilian Cosa Nostra.
The investigations have made it possible to shed light on the criminal operations of a decision-making and operational mafia cell completely independent from the branches of the Cosa Nostra in Catania which, in the past, also managed mafia affairs in the territory of the Alcantara valley.
Among the recipients of the precautionary measure, issued by the investigating judge of Messina at the request of the Dda of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the City of the Strait, there are the mayor and the deputy mayor of Moio, together with the head of the Territorial Services and Environment Area of ??the Municipality and the councilor for Public Works of the Municipality of Malvagna.

Mafia, the return of the released bosses: 9 arrests in Palermo
Anti-mafia maxiper in Palermo, the State Police dismantle the leaders of the mafia district of Noce. Five suspects have already served a sentence.
The District Anti-Mafia Directorate of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Palermo today delegated the State Police to execute a precautionary custody order in prison, issued by the Gip of the capital, against 9 suspects (of which 8 in prison and 1 to house arrest), held for various reasons responsible for mafia-type association and extortion with the aggravating circumstance of the mafia method. The restrictive measure stems from a complex investigation activity initiated by the Palermo Mobile Squad and by the Central Operational Service of the Central Anti-Crime Directorate, in 2020 and coordinated by the local Public Prosecutor’s Office – DDA -, which would have allowed the reconstruction of the organization chart of mafia families of the district of Noce / Cruillas which includes the mafia families of La Noce, Cruillas / Malaspina and Altarello.

Raffaele Ganci, boss of the Noce district of Palermo, considered a trusted man by Totò Riina, died at the age of 90 and was a member of the so-called "provincial commission" of Cosa Nostra.
Successor of Totò Scaglione known as the Boxeur - killed on the initiative of Don Raffaele in 1982 - Ganci was involved in construction and the meat trade: he was believed to be a loyalist of Totò Riina, to whom he provided assistance during his inaction, interrupted on January 15, 1993 immediately after leaving the residence in via Bernini where he lived with his family. An area, that, under the control of the families of Uditore-Passo di Rigano and the neighboring area of ??Noce.
One of the many life sentences to which he was sentenced was that for the murder of the prefect of Palermo, Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa. Among other things, the Ganci family ran a butcher's shop in Via Lo Jacono, in Palermo. He was arrested on 10 June 1993, in Terrasini, after 5 years of inaction, together with his sons Nunzio and Calogero and his son-in-law Francesco Paolo Anzelmo. He died in Milan while he was serving several life sentences under a hard prison regime (Article 41 bis).

Palermo, mafia: 24 arrests, boss with State subsidy BREAKING NEWS Regina News about 4 hours ago Palermo, mafia: 24 arrests, boss with State subsidyPalermo, mafia: 24 arrests, boss with State subsidy The district of Santa Maria di Gesù has been hit.
PALERMO – From lace to the local party. Life between Villagrazia and Santa Maria di Gesù was ruled by the bosses. Some of whom had the time to devote themselves to crime, as much as their salary was taken care of by the state with the “citizenship income”. Money stolen from those who really need financial support.
During the night, 24 arrests were made, 21 in prison and three under house arrest. The blitz of the Carabinieri del Ros, coordinated by the Palermo Anti-Mafia District Directorate, hits one of the historic city districts.
The disputed accusations are mafia-type association, extortion, association aimed at drug trafficking, robbery and fraudulent transfer of values. The carabinieri of the provincial command provided operational support to the blitz.
It emerges that some entrepreneurs in the food distribution and betting sector have made their activities available to the mafia. At two of them, at the request of the deputy prosecutor Paolo Guido and the substitutes Luisa Bettiol and Dario Scaletta, the investigating judge imposed a temporary ban on trading.
The money from the lace and drugs was used to finance the families of the detainees. Those who are free must take care of the men of honor who have ended up in prison: this is the basic rule of the Cosa Nostra. The Guadagna district is confirmed as one of the main dealing squares in the city of Palermo. It turned out that part of the marijuana came from an uncovered plantation in Riesi, in the province of Caltanissetta.
To certify the relations between the families of Santa Maria di Gesù and Villagrazia, which are part of the district, is the story of a building contractor forced to pay the protection money: the amount was divided between the two clans.
Territory control was rigid. This is demonstrated by the imposition of a supply of beverages on the owners of a reception hall; a robbery of a watch salesman; the return of a car stolen from the relative of a mafia member of the Palermo Centro family.
And then there is the local festival. The bosses decided everything: which streets to close, where to place the stalls, which and how many drinks to sell. And of course which neo-melodic singer should perform on stage. The concert eventually skipped, but only because there was the refusal of the commissioner.

The trial against the former senator Tonino D'Alì returns to the Cassation July 14, 2022
The trial against the former Trapanese senator Tonino D'Alì , accused of external competition in a mafia association, returns for the second time to the Supreme Court.
Already in January 2018, the proceedings against the former Undersecretary of the Interior (D'Alì held that office from 2001 to 2005) ended before the Supreme Court, on that occasion the judges annulled with postponement to a new appeal process, the sentence by which the former senator of Forza Italia was acquitted for the charges subsequent to 1993 and prescribed for the crimes contested for the previous period.
In July 2021, the Palermo Court of Appeal sentenced the former Trapani politician to six years in prison. The provision was read by the president of the college, judge Antonio Napoli, after a brief council chamber. The Attorney General, with the pg Rita Fulantelli, had asked for a sentence of 7 years and 4 months, while the defense had called for acquittal. In the meantime, D'Alì's lawyers have filed an appeal and now the Supreme Court has set the date of the hearing to be held on 11 October next .
In October 2021 the reasons with which the judges of the Court of Appeal of Palermo sentenced Antonio D'Alì to six years in prison for external competition in a mafia association were filed. The judges summarize in 138 pages the consolidated relationships with the Messina Denaro , from the old Don Ciccio, farmer of the D'Alì family lands, to his son Matteo, nowadays "red primrose".

Whole D'Alì family is very close to powerful mafia members for decades also they are all part of freemasonry. Trapani cosa nostra always had strong links to Freemasonry.

Palermo, the boss returns to freedom and reorganizes the clan: 9 arrests. The alarm of the central director of crime: "The bosses do not stop". And no one denounces the lace by Salvo Palazzolo
Pietro Tumminia at the top of the Altarello family after serving twelve years. Another mafioso arrested today, Felisiano Tognetti, had even received a permit. Prefect Messina: "Detention alone is not enough to sever the link between the condemned man and the organization" JULY 19, 2022 UPDATED AT07:52 2 MINUTES OF READING Prison is not a problem for the mafia. The most authoritative godparents of Palermo serve their sentences in silence and then return to the command of the clans. This is what happened to Pietro Tumminia , head of the family from Altarello, a neighborhood on the south-eastern outskirts of the city: he spent twelve years in prison, in December 2020 he returned to freedom, and on the same day he resumed his place at inside the Cosa Nostra. With the consent of the entire crime family. Another mafioso, Felisiano Tognetti , had even received a permit: when he arrived in Palermo, he too had worked hard to relaunch Tumminia's projects.
It did not escape the policemen of the mobile squad headed by Marco Basile , who arrested 9 members of the reorganized clan last night. At the top of the list are Tumminia and Tognetti. The investigation coordinated by the deputy prosecutor Paolo Guido , the coordinator of the district anti-mafia Directorate, and by the substitutes Giovanni Antoci and Dario Scaletta discovered that Tumminia and her accomplices had returned to impose the lace massively on the traders in the area: the interceptions have rebuilt about ten extortion episodes. “None of the victims reported - explains the central anti-crime director of the police, prefect Francesco Messina, who is in Palermo today with the police chief Lamberto Giannini to commemorate Paolo Borsellino and the five police officers killed thirty years ago - a silence that must make us reflect. Lace is no longer considered as an imposition, but as payment for a service offered by the criminal organization. Maybe, to have a monopoly on the sale of a specific product ".
The collapse of complaints seems to have become a constant in the latest anti-mafia investigations: in Brancaccio, there are even forty traders who have ended up under investigation for aiding and abetting, because they persisted in denying extortion despite the evidence of wiretapping. Now, in the latest raid, an unsuspected craftsman even ends up under house arrest accused of having been a collector of lace. This is Paolo Gulotta , a well-known carpenter in Palermo.
"The return of the godparents" "The worrying figure is the revival of the mafia released from prison". The prefect Messina recalls that even the head of the district of La Noce, which includes the Altarello family, had returned to a crime after a long period of imprisonment. This is Carmelo Giancarlo Seidita , he was rearrested at the end of May by the mobile squad.
"The detention alone seems not to have been effective in severing the link between the convict and the mafia organization," says the central anti-crime director. "Prison detention for the duration of the sentence did not allow the recovery of the condemned, nor his re-education, so much so that once the suspects regained their freedom, they resumed pursuing the interests of the Mafia families to which they belong". An observation that leads to a consequence: "There is a sort of specialty of the Mafia prisoner that necessarily ends up legitimizing a peculiar detention treatment against him". An issue that affects the debate on life imprisonment. Investigations say granting permits to bosses could have devastating effects:
The reorganization The released prisoners are now the new heads of the mafia families of Palermo. And they aim straight at the reorganization of the Cosa Nostra through two businesses above all: drug trafficking and online betting. The godparents need to feed the assistance fund for the many inmates. But they also point to new business in the legal economy. Tumminia had invested in a large parking lot, which is now seized. And she was also aiming for something else. The lace racket served him not so much for the money he could get, but for the control of the territory: the silence, or rather, the proximity of the traders, was the real success of which the mafia were proud. Thirty years after the Falcone and Borsellino massacres.
