VENICE - Four precautionary measures and a seizure of assets worth over 9 million euros were carried out by the Guardia di Finanza in the provinces of Verona, Mantua and Trento as part of an investigation into the infiltration of the 'Ndrangheta. Drug trafficker, fugitive Luciano Camporesi captured in Turkey

REGGIO CALABRIA – On November 11, in Turkey, in the province of Antalya, the fugitive Luciano Camporesi, 47, was located and captured, sentenced in the first instance by the Court of Locri to 22 years and 8 months in prison for the crime of international drug trafficking.

Camporesi had been untraceable since 5 December 2018, when he had escaped the execution of the precautionary custody order in prison issued by the GIP of the Court of Reggio Calabria as part of the Pollino – European ‘Ndrangheta Connection operation, coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Reggio Calabria, directed by the Prosecutor Giovanni Bombardieri.

In recent weeks, the investigative activity has been directed towards Turkey thanks to the information provided by the Anti-Mafia Investigation Directorate which, as part of the activities conducted by the Palermo Operations Center, has acquired concrete elements, shared with the Central Operations Service and the Flying Squad of Reggio Calabria, such as to locate the fugitive, at least until 2021, in Turkish territory.

The Turkish authorities were therefore activated through the I-CAN (Interpol Cooperation Against ‘Ndrangheta) Unit of the International Police Cooperation Service of the Central Police Directorate.

On the basis of the information provided, in the night between 11 and 12 November last, personnel of the Intelligence and Organized Crime and Anti-Smuggling Department of the Turkish Police tracked down and arrested the fugitive Luciano Camporesi who was in an apartment in the city of Antalya, in possession of false documents.

Camporesi’s central role had been reconstructed in the Pollino – European ‘Ndrangheta Connection investigation which revealed the operation of an association active in international drug trafficking between South America, Italy and north-western Europe.

The investigation ended, in the preliminary investigation phase, with the arrest of 70 suspects, for various reasons, for mafia association, criminal association aimed at drug trafficking, extortion, violations of the legislation on weapons, fraudulent transfer of assets , simulation of crime, fraudulent damage to insured goods, money laundering, self-laundering and personal aiding and abetting.

In particular Luciano Camporesi Luciano is considered, and was convicted in the first instance for this, a participant in the association aimed at drug trafficking and precisely in this context he had established close relationships of criminal collaboration with the Calabrian co-suspects Domenico Pelle (of the homonymous gang of San Luca) and Giovanni Gentile, with whom he had met in April 2017 to plan the arrival in Italy of huge loads of narcotic substances (cocaine and hashish), using both commercial ships and one of his boats as carriers which sailed for to search for oil at sea, authorized to freely travel multiple routes without arousing suspicion.

His searches, delegated by the Reggio Calabria District Anti-Mafia Directorate to the Reggio Calabria Flying Squad, had been intensified after the conviction in the first instance and extended to various foreign countries in which the fugitive certainly appeared to have connections.

The police forces of 14 countries, under the aegis of Interpol, are meeting in Rome to define together the strategy to combat the 'Ndrangheta. In fact, the 1st Conference of the Focal Points of the I-CAN Project ( Interpol Cooperation Against 'Ndrangheta) is underway at the Police Training School in Rome (from 14 to 17 November 2022).

"The 'Ndrangheta has become a criminal holding company: it no longer attacks the state frontally - explained the prefect Vittorio Rizzi, deputy director general of Public Security and promoter of the project - it is a silent and pervasive mafia that pollutes legal economies, intoxicating them with corruption and money laundering. The times we live in, he added, require the maximum resilience of the police force, which must adapt quickly to rapidly changing criminal scenarios to maximize profits, taking advantage of technological progress, from cryptocurrencies to the metaverse ».

During the event, the Multimedia Information Research and Analysis Center of the Public Security Department, together with Leonardo spa, presented the document analysis project, already in an advanced stage of implementation, which will be capable of correlating police information with those collected on the web, even automatically. In the last stage of its evolution it will be endowed with predictive abilities.

The sharing of information and experiences is - according to Cyril Gout, director of operational support and analysis of Interpol - the key to achieving success in the fight against the mafia phenomenon. The results achieved by the I CAN project invite us, he stressed, to go beyond the normal propensity of police forces to keep investigative data hidden.

As the Public Prosecutor of Reggio Calabria, Giovanni Bombardieri, later explained, "the 'Ndrangheta is not an Italian but a global problem: it has hired the best professionals to infiltrate the legal economies through the proceeds of illegal activities, dialogue and do business with the most dangerous criminal cartels around the world. Until recently, international police cooperation was implemented only in the final phase of investigations, in the making of arrests and in the capture of fugitives. What is the I CAN project
Born in 2020, on the initiative of the Department of Public Security and the General Secretariat of Interpol, the I-CAN Project aims to promote the global fight against organized crime of Calabrian origin, first of all to increase the awareness of the threat, through the exchange of information and experiences, starting from the Italian investigative model which was the first to face the 'Ndrangheta. In little more than two years, the Project has created a network that has allowed the capture of 36 dangerous fugitives all over the world, as well as having favored the recognition of those indicators that are useful for the police force to intercept the infiltration of the mafia organization in economic and financial assets of the various countries.

(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 22 - Italian police on Tuesday made 49 arrests in a Milan probe into the 'reconstitution' of a 'locale' or branch of the Calabria-basd 'Ndrangheta mafia in the city of Rho near the Lombard capital, which had been smashed by a 'maxi-operation' in 2000.
For the first time in Lombary, police said they had found a women among the 'Ndrangheta bosses, who was "even more merciless than the males": the right hand woman of boss Cristian Bandiera, "who replaces him in a series of activities".
In all, police said they had found five women among the 'Ndrangheta operatives in Lombardy.
Police seizes assets worth 40 million euros from 'Ndrangheta linked businessmen in the probe.
Police intercepts turned up threats including "I'll eat your liver and that of those two sh***y rats," "today I'll come to your house and batter you to death" and "remember that they're going to bring me a piece of you".
The 49 people arrested have been charged with mafia association, drug trafficking, extortion, threats, private violence, arson, and possession and use of illegal weapons, all aggravated by using mafia methods. (ANSA).

(ANSA) - ROME, NOV 22 - The city councils of Anzio and Nettuno on the Lazio coast south of Rome were dissolved for mafia infiltration on Tuesday.
The two seaside towns, famous since antiquity as holiday destinations for Romans, have been placed under special administration for 18 months.
Commissioners will report to the government on how far the Mob infiltration has been resolved.
Some 64 people were arrested in a big anti-mafia operation in the area codenamed Triton recently.
The probe highlighted a high degree f penetration of the local economy by the Calabria-based 'Ndrangheta mafia, Italy's richest and most dangerous organised crime outfit thanks to its control of much of the European cocaine trade.
It is the second time Nettuno has been commissioned off for criminal infiltration of business and administration sectors since 2005.
'Ndrangheta bosses had set up a local branch, called 'locale' in Italian, to manage their control over local public works tenders as well as purely criminal activities like protection and drugs rackets.
The town council of Cosoleto near Reggio Calabria was also dissolved for Mob infiltration Tuesday. (ANSA).
